Chapter 14 - The Dead End

The harsh glare of the tactical flashlight bounced blindingly off the damp concrete walls of the underground drainage tunnel, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the stale air. Footsteps splashed rapidly through the shallow runoff water behind them, echoing with terrifying proximity.

"Faster!" David urged, his voice tight with strain as the bioluminescent glow in his hands flickered and pulsed with erratic energy.

Elena stumbled over a rusted metal pipe protruding from the floor, gasping as Clara caught her by the arm just in time to prevent a disastrous fall. Her light blue t-shirt was soaked through with grimy runoff water, and her legs felt like lead, but survival instinct pushed her forward through the claustrophobic nightmare.

Ahead of them, the tunnel abruptly narrowed, terminating in a massive, rusted iron grate that blocked the exit. Beyond the heavy bars, they could hear the distant, heavy rumble of traffic rushing along the interstate highway. They had made it nearly half a mile from the house, but they had run straight into a dead end.

David slammed his hands against the iron bars, shaking the heavy gate with a burst of frantic energy. But the padlock holding it shut was thick and unyielding, rusted solid into the heavy steel frame.

"It's locked!" David hissed, his breath hitching as the beam of the tactical flashlight swung around the final corner of the tunnel, pinning them in the harsh, glaring light.

"Halt! Stay where you are!" a mechanical, filtered voice commanded from the shadows twenty yards back. Two operatives in black tactical gear stepped into view, their suppressed carbines raised and trained directly at Clara and Elena.

Elena let out a muffled sob, pressing herself flat against the cold concrete wall, squeezing her eyes shut. Clara stepped in front of her sister and David, her hands raised, her dark reddish-brown hair matted with sweat and dirt.

"Don't shoot!" Clara yelled, her voice echoing sharply against the stone. "You want the research? You want the bloodlines? It's right here!"

David looked at Clara, a profound, tragic understanding passing between brother and sister. Without a word, David stepped past Clara, his glowing hands flaring with a sudden, blinding brilliance that illuminated the entire subterranean chamber like a flashbulb.

"No, David!" Clara screamed, lunging forward.

Before the tactical operatives could pull their triggers, David slammed his bare hands directly against the rusted iron grate, unleashing a surge of raw, kinetic energy that melted the steel bars like butter just as the first rifle fired.
