Chapter 2 - Beneath the Floorboards

The dull thud reverberated through the foundation, freezing both women in their tracks. The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the beige siding, but a sudden, unnatural chill seemed to radiate from the crawl space vent near Clara's feet. Elena slowly lowered her arms, her gaze shifting from Clara's intense, bloodshot eyes down to the weathered wooden planks of the back porch.
"What was that?" Elena asked, her voice losing its previous defensive edge, replaced by a creeping, jittery dread.
Clara didn't answer immediately. She swallowed hard, her hand instinctively reaching back to clutch the dark green cardigan tighter around her chest, as if she could physically shield herself from whatever was lurking beneath them. The black trash bag lay heavily on the gravel, a dark, ominous shape that seemed to pulse in the slanting sunlight.
"That," Clara said softly, her breath hitching in her throat, "is why I had to break the window. It was the only way to get your attention before it was too late."
Elena took a cautious half-step back, her dark eyes narrowing with suspicion and fear. "Clara, you're scaring me. What did you find in the attic? Did you touch Mom's old lockbox?"
"I didn't just touch it, Elena. I opened it," Clara replied, her voice trembling as she gestured toward the shattered glass of the living room window. "And everything we thought we knew about our family, about the disappearance of our older brother twenty years ago, is a complete lie fabricated by the very people who raised us."
Elena stared at her, the color draining rapidly from her face. Their older brother, David, had vanished without a trace when they were children, a tragedy that had broken their parents and haunted their childhood home. Their mother had passed away just three months ago, leaving the sisters to clear out the estate.
"That's impossible," Elena murmured, shaking her head in denial. "The police searched this entire property. They dug up the yard. There was nothing."
"The police didn't look under the root cellar," Clara said grimly.

Suddenly, the heavy metal grate of the root cellar doors, located just around the corner of the house, began to rattle violently from the inside.
