Chapter 3 - The Root Cellar Rattle

The metallic screech of the cellar doors vibrating against their concrete frame cut through the quiet suburban afternoon like a siren. Elena stumbled backward, colliding heavily against the wooden fence with a sharp gasp. Her light blue t-shirt snagged on a splinter, but she didn't care; her eyes were glued to the rusted iron handles of the root cellar, which were now visibly jerking up and down as if someone—or something—was desperately trying to claw their way out from the dark subterranean depths.

"Clara..." Elena whispered, her voice paralyzed in her throat, her fingers digging into the weathered wood of the fence for support. "What is that?"

Clara stood her ground, though her blue jeans trembled noticeably. She kept her dark reddish-brown hair swept back from her face with one hand, her other hand still resting protectively near the black trash bag on the ground. She didn't look surprised by the noise; instead, she looked utterly resigned, as if a nightmare she had anticipated for days was finally materializing.

"That," Clara said, her voice eerily calm compared to the chaos unfolding around them, "is David."

Elena let out a short, hysterical laugh, shaking her head rapidly. "David is dead! He disappeared when we were seven years old! The police found his jacket by the river!"

"The jacket was planted," Clara stated flatly, stepping closer to her sister and grabbing her by the forearm. Her grip was tight, urgent, and entirely real. "Mom and Dad didn't lose a son, Elena. They locked him away because of what he started showing signs of doing. And they kept him down there for two decades, feeding him through a chute while they pretended to mourn a ghost."

The rattling of the cellar doors stopped abruptly, replaced by a heavy, deliberate scraping sound from underneath the concrete steps. A long, agonizing pause stretched between the two sisters as the summer wind rustled through the backyard trees. Then, a voice scraped up from the darkness—raspy, disused, and utterly chilling—spoke a single word that shattered Elena's entire reality.

"Elena..." the voice croaked from the cellar. "Help me open the latch."
