Chapter 13 - Into the Underworld

The thunderous crash of the front door splintering open shook the entire hallway. Heavy combat boots stomped rapidly across the foyer, the calculated, rhythmic steps of trained killers closing in fast.
"They're in the house!" Elena cried out, her voice pitching high with panic as she grabbed the brass handle of the interior cellar door, throwing it wide open.
A wave of damp, subterranean air rushed up from the dark stairwell, carrying the faint, metallic scent of stagnant water and old concrete. Without hesitation, David plunged down the steep wooden steps first, moving with an eerie, spider-like agility despite his decades of confinement. Clara shoved Elena through the doorway ahead of her, slamming the heavy wooden door shut behind them just as the first tactical operative rounded the corner of the hallway with his carbine raised.
A hail of suppressed gunfire chewed through the wooden cellar door, sending heavy splinters flying across the hallway and clipping Clara's dark green cardigan as she dove backward down the dark stairwell. She hit the concrete floor hard, scraping her palms and bruising her knee, but adrenaline completely masked the pain.
"Clara! Down here!" David's voice echoed faintly from the pitch-black corridor ahead.
Pitch-black darkness swallowed them whole. Elena was hyperventilating, her hands flailing wildly against the cold stone walls until Clara grabbed her trembling shoulders.
"Stay behind me, Elena. Keep your head down," Clara whispered fiercely, pulling her sister close as they hurried through the damp tunnel after David.
The only illumination came from a faint, pulsating green glow emanating from David's hands as he guided them forward. Elena stopped dead in her tracks, staring in horror at her brother's palms, which were literally emitting a soft, bioluminescent light.
"David... what are they doing to you?" Elena sobbed quietly, tears finally cutting tracks through the dirt on her face. "What happened down here?"
"The injections weren't a disease, Elena," David whispered back over his shoulder, not slowing his pace as he navigated the maze of ancient concrete pipes. "They were an adaptation. Dad tried to cure me, but Mom... Mom realized what I was becoming. They kept me alive because my blood holds the key to the entire project."
Suddenly, the beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight cut through the darkness far behind them, illuminating the tunnel walls and catching up to them at terrifying speed.

"They're in the ventilation shaft!" a harsh, filtered voice echoed from behind. "Flush them out!"
