Chapter 9: Total Darkness

The sudden blackout plunged the modern living room into absolute, suffocating darkness. The only illumination came from the erratic, rhythmic red pulse of the ceiling security camera's battery backup, casting a bloody, strobe-like glow across the walls.
"Stay calm! Nobody move!" Detective Vance's voice boomed through the dark, followed immediately by the heavy metallic click of his flashlight turning on.
A harsh beam of white light cut across the room, sweeping frantically from left to right. The beam bounced off the white tile floor, illuminating the abandoned red stiletto, the scattered photographs, and the pool of blood.
Marcus blinked against the sudden glare, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Clara!" he shouted, dropping to his hands and knees to feel around the floor. "Clara, where are you?"
His hand brushed against cold, slick tile, but the space where Clara had been lying was completely empty. The military-grade combat knife lay abandoned near the edge of the mahogany console, gleaming faintly under the red camera pulse, but Clara was gone.
"She vanished," Elena's voice trembled from somewhere near the entryway. The beam of Vance's flashlight caught her huddled against the wall, her dark hair tangled around her pale face. "How did she move so fast? She was bleeding out just a second ago!"
Detective Vance swung his flashlight toward the hallway doors, his boots crunching on something small and hard. He knelt down briefly, scooping up a tiny, metallic object before rising sharply.
"It's a micro-jammer," Vance said grimly, holding up a small black device that was blinking with a blue LED light. "Someone disabled the main electrical breaker from inside the house, and this device jammed our radio frequencies. We're completely cut off."
Marcus stood up, his breathing ragged. He wiped sweat from his forehead, his fingers coming away damp. "That means the man outside... the one who broke into the garage... he's in the house."
As if in confirmation, a heavy thud echoed from the upper landing of the grand staircase just past the entryway. Someone—or something—was walking slowly down the stairs, step by deliberate step, the wood groaning under their weight in the dark.
Vance raised his service weapon, leveling it directly at the base of the stairs. "Identify yourself!" the detective commanded, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.
The footsteps stopped. A low, distorted chuckle drifted down from the darkness of the stairway, followed by the metallic clink of a heavy iron crowbar dragging along the wooden banister.

And then, a familiar voice echoed through the dark, dripping with malicious amusement.
"Looking for me, Detective?"
