Chapter 8: The Hidden Blade

The metallic whisper of a zipper sliding open cut through the frantic shouts in the living room. Marcus, pinned against the wall by Detective Vance, watched in slow motion as Clara’s hand slipped deep inside the secret lining of her white dress.
"Detective, look at her!" Marcus screamed, straining against Vance’s grip. "She's got something!"
Vance reacted instantly. Releasing Marcus with a violent shove that sent him stumbling over the coffee table, the detective spun around, lowering his service weapon toward the floor.
"Hands where I can see them, Ms. Evans!" Vance ordered sharply, stepping over the scattered surveillance photographs. "Step away from whatever you're holding!"
Clara didn't scream or panic. Instead, a chilling, placid smile spread across her pale lips. She pulled her hand out of the dress lining, clutching a small, folding military-grade combat knife with a gleaming four-inch blade. The blood smeared across her fingers contrasted sharply with the cold, sterile steel.
"You're too late, Detective," Clara whispered smoothly, her voice no longer weak or fragile. The trembling pain was completely gone.
Elena shrieked, backing away until she tripped over the maroon cowl-neck of her own dress, crashing heavily onto the white tile floor near the entryway.
Vance flicked the flashlight attachment on his pistol rail, illuminating Clara's face in a harsh, bright beam. "Drop the weapon right now, or I will open fire!"
"Go ahead," Clara mocked softly, tilting her head back against the floorboards. She didn't raise the knife to attack the detective; instead, she pressed the razor-sharp tip directly against her own collarbone, right over her jugular vein. "If you shoot me, you'll never find out who really hired the man outside. And more importantly... you'll never know what happened to the missing half-million dollars from Marcus's company accounts."
Marcus caught his balance and scrambled to his feet, staring down at Clara in absolute horror. The woman he had lived with for three years, the woman who had supposedly been the innocent victim of a violent home invasion just minutes ago, was an absolute stranger.
"Clara... what are you talking about?" Marcus breathed, his voice cracking. "What money?"
Clara's eyes flicked to Marcus, filled with a toxic mix of resentment and affection. "Your company funds, darling. I transferred them out three days ago. Elena found out, which is why she came over tonight. She tried to stop me... and I had to defend myself."
Elena scrambled backward on the floor, pointing a frantic finger at Clara. "She's lying! She attacked me with that knife first! I only managed to turn it on her during the struggle!"

Detective Vance glanced back and forth between the two women, his jaw tightening. He reached for his radio mic clipped to his shoulder. "Dispatch, this is Vance. I need backup at the Hayes residence immediately. We have a hostage situation involving—"
Before Vance could finish his sentence, the overhead security camera emitted a loud, piercing shriek, and every single light in the house instantly flickered off, plunging them into pitch blackness.
