Chapter 3: The Envelope of Deception

The man Manila envelope lay innocently on the dark mahogany console, yet it radiated an oppressive aura that silenced the room. Marcus stared at it, his breath catching in his throat. The bold black letters stamped across the top read confidential: asset recovery and surveillance.
"What is that?" Marcus asked, his voice barely a rasp. He didn't want to look away from Clara, whose breathing was growing shallower by the second, but the gravity of the envelope pulled at his focus.
Elena wiped a stray tear from her cheek with the back of her trembling hand, keeping her distance.
"Open it, Marcus," Elena urged, her voice steadying slightly, though terror still lingered in her wide eyes. "That's why I came over tonight. Clara didn't just happen to be here. She engineered this entire situation."
On the floor, Clara let out a weak, desperate gasp. Her fingers clawed weakly at the white tile.
"Marcus... don't listen to her lies..." Clara choked out, coughing lightly as a thin line of crimson escaped the corner of her mouth. "She's trying to cover her tracks... she stabbed me..."
Marcus looked between the two women, his mind fracturing under the weight of conflicting realities. He stood up abruptly, his boots making a heavy sound against the floorboards as he strode over to the console. His calloused fingers gripped the edge of the manila envelope. He pulled out a stack of glossy photographs and a folded document.
The first photograph slipped from his grip and fluttered down to the floor. It showed Elena standing outside a downtown hotel, handing a heavy brown envelope of cash to a man with a scarred cheek.
Marcus picked it up, his eyes widening in betrayal. He glared at Elena.
"You were paying someone?" Marcus accused, his voice shaking with fury. "You've been spying on me?"
"Not on you, Marcus," Elena cried out, stepping closer despite his glare. "On her! That man is a private investigator. Clara hired him to dig up dirt on your company accounts. She was planning to ruin you and take everything."

Marcus spun around to face Clara on the floor, the photographs clutched tightly in his fist. Clara's eyes met his, and for a fraction of a second, the innocent victim expression vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating glare.
Before Clara could speak, the front doorbell echoed loudly through the silent house, making all three of them jump.
