Chapter 2: The Red Light Secret

The electronic hum from the ceiling security camera vibrated through the tense silence of the room. Marcus did not break his intense gaze away from Elena. His chest rose and fell in heavy, measured breaths.
"The backup file," Marcus said, his voice dangerously low. "It records audio as well as video, Elena. Every single word we spoke tonight is saved on that hard drive."
Elena stepped backward, her red high heels clicking sharply against the polished wooden transition strip near the hallway. Her face turned chalk white.
"Marcus, please, you have to turn it off," Elena begged, her voice trembling as she reached blindly behind her. "You don't understand what this footage will actually show. It's not what you think."
"Then show me," Marcus demanded, taking another heavy step forward. "Prove it to me right now."
On the floor, Clara groaned softly. Her hand slipped slightly from her abdomen, revealing a darker stain spreading rapidly across the pristine white fabric of her dress. Her eyelids fluttered weakly.
"Marcus," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the camera. "Don't... don't trust her."
Marcus froze. He glanced down at Clara, torn between the dying woman on the floor and the desperate woman standing before him. The flashing red light overhead pulsed faster, casting erratic shadows across their faces.
"Clara, stay with me," Marcus pleaded, dropping back to his knees. "Look at me. Keep your eyes open."
Elena rushed forward, her hands hovering helplessly. "We need an ambulance, Marcus! Stop interrogating me and call an ambulance!"
"Stay back!" Marcus roared, his head snapping up. "You've done enough."
Elena stumbled back as if struck. Tears finally spilled over her dark lashes, cutting tracks through her makeup. She reached into the pocket of her maroon dress, her fingers brushing against a cold metallic object she had kept hidden the entire evening.
"You think I wanted this?" Elena whispered, her tone shifting from panic to a chilling, hollow despair. "I came here tonight to save us. To save you."
Marcus narrowed his eyes. "Save me from what?"
Elena slowly pulled her hand out of her pocket. Clutched tightly in her palm was not a weapon, but a small, heavy brass key engraved with a faded hotel room number.

"From Clara," Elena said softly. "Look at the table."
Marcus slowly turned his head toward the mahogany console near the entryway. Resting beside his keys was a thick manila envelope, unsealed, with the official letterhead of a private detective agency facing upward.
