Chapter 10: The Voice on the Stairs

The distorted chuckle faded into the heavy, echoing silence of the darkened house. The red pulse of the security camera overhead swept back and forth, painting the living room in intermittent strokes of crimson light.

Detective Vance kept his service weapon locked firmly on the base of the grand staircase, his muscles coiled like a spring. "Show your hands right now or I will open fire!" Vance barked, his voice cutting through the thick air.

From the shadows of the upper landing, a tall figure stepped forward into the faint red glow. It was a man wearing a dark tactical jacket over a black shirt—the exact outfit Marcus was wearing. But as the figure descended another step, the harsh flashlight beam from Vance's pistol caught the man's face.

It wasn't a mask. It was a mirror-image duplicate of Marcus, down to the short light brown hair and the slight scar near his left eyebrow.

Marcus stumbled back, colliding heavily with the mahogany console. He grabbed the edge of the table to steady himself, his breath catching in his throat. "Who... what are you?" Marcus whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.

The doppelgänger smiled, a cold, predatory smirk that Marcus had never seen on his own face in any mirror. He tossed the heavy iron crowbar aside, letting it crash loudly onto the hardwood floor near the bottom of the stairs.

"You always were a slow learner, Marcus," the duplicate said smoothly, his voice an exact match, yet carrying an unsettling, metallic resonance. "Three years of playing the successful architect, living in this pristine white house, while the real work was happening downstairs."

Detective Vance glanced sideways at the real Marcus, then back up at the imposter. "Mr. Hayes, I suggest you explain this right now, or I'm arresting both of you as co-conspirators."

"I don't know him!" Marcus yelled, his hands trembling as he stepped away from the console. "I swear to God, I've never seen this man in my life!"

Elena crawled out from the corner of the entryway, clutching her maroon dress around her knees. She stared up at the top of the stairs, her eyes widening in sudden, absolute terror as she noticed something else stepping out of the shadows behind the doppelgänger.

Clara walked out into the dim red light. The blood on her white dress was completely dry, and the severe wound on her abdomen was nothing more than a shallow, superficial scratch smeared with theatrical stage makeup.

She wasn't limping anymore. She walked with a steady, confident stride, stepping up right beside the fake Marcus and slipping her arm through his.

"The security system didn't catch us by accident, Marcus," Clara said softly, her voice dripping with venomous sweetness. "We programmed it. Every single camera, every backup file, every dollar in your offshore accounts. It was all a trap to bring you right where we wanted you."

Before Marcus could process the betrayal, the front windows of the living room suddenly shattered inward in a deafening explosion of breaking glass.
