Chapter 14: The Final Breach

The heavy double white doors shuddered violently as the battering rams struck them again from the outside. Splintering wood and cracking drywall echoed through the bright, sterile living room like rolling thunder.

Detective Vance froze, his service weapon still aimed at Marcus's chest, but his hand trembled just a fraction. He looked at the shattered windows, then at the sealed doors, realizing their escape routes were completely severed.

"Drop your weapon, Vance!" a booming voice amplified through a bullhorn echoed from the front porch. "Federal Cybercrime Division! Surrender immediately and keep your hands where we can see them!"

The duplicate Marcus lunged forward, abandoning his calm demeanor as panic finally cracked his polished facade. He grabbed Vance’s shoulder, shaking him violently. "Do something! Shoot him! Override the lockdown!"

"I can't!" Vance shouted, shoving the duplicate away as he kept his eyes locked on Marcus. "The network is locked at the mainframe level! It's encrypted end-to-end!"

Clara backed away toward the grand staircase, her face draining of all color. Her mask of cool manipulation was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered fury. She reached into the tactical jumpsuit beneath her open dress, her fingers frantically searching for a hidden comms earpiece.

"Extraction is compromised!" Clara screamed into her collar mic. "Burn the servers! Burn everything!"

Marcus didn't hesitate. He lunged across the white tile floor, sliding past the scattered photographs and the abandoned red stiletto shoe, diving straight for Clara before she could reach the control panel hidden behind the mahogany console.

The duplicate Marcus intercepted him mid-air, tackling Marcus hard to the ground. They crashed onto the pristine floor, trading desperate, heavy blows in the harsh glare of the overhead lights.

"You ruin everything!" the duplicate snarled, pinning Marcus's arm behind his back.

Marcus gritted his teeth, ignoring the sharp pain in his shoulder, and headbutted his duplicate with a sudden, ferocious burst of adrenaline. The duplicate cried out, staggering backward and crashing heavily against the mahogany table, sending the manila envelope and photographs flying into the air like a flurry of white snow.

Elena, seizing the opportunity, scrambled across the floor, grabbed the heavy iron crowbar left near the stairs, and brought it down hard against the micro-jammer device resting on the console, shattering it into a dozen metallic pieces.

With a deafening crash, the front double doors finally blew inward, torn entirely off their hinges.

Through the smoke and splintered wood, dozens of federal agents in full tactical gear poured into the living room, their rifles raised, lasers painting a web of red dots across Vance, Clara, and the duplicate Marcus.

"Down on the ground! Do it now!" the lead tactical commander roared, sweeping the room with authority.

Vance slowly let his service weapon drop from his hand, letting it clatter against the white tile floor. He raised his hands slowly above his head. Clara and the duplicate Marcus froze, slowly dropping to their knees as agents swarmed around them, snapping heavy steel cuffs onto their wrists.

Marcus pushed himself up from the floor, wiping blood from his lip as he watched his betrayers being hauled away one by one. Elena stood beside him, breathing heavily, leaning against the console for support.

As Detective Vance was pushed past Marcus toward the broken doorway, the rogue auditor paused, turning his head to meet Marcus's cold, steady gaze.

"You think this is the end of the syndicate, Marcus?" Vance muttered quietly, a chilling smirk touching his lips as federal agents forced him forward. "We were just the middle management."
