Chapter 11 - Into the Storm
The freezing rain battered their skin as Clara and Arthur tumbled onto the slippery concrete overhang outside the third-floor window. Below them, the rain-slicked hospital parking lot stretched out into the dark, empty night. Arthur coughed violently, wiping rainwater from his eyes as he demanded to know where they were heading. Clara pointed to an old black motorcycle idling near the emergency exit, its engine rumbling through the storm. She explained that Evelyn’s corporate syndicate had been erasing children's memories and replacing them with bio-mechanical weapons for over a decade. Arthur clutched his head, the memories of his wife feeling more distorted and fake with every passing second. Suddenly, the window behind them shattered outward as the lead tactical operative emerged onto the ledge with a rifle raised. Clara didn't hesitate; she fired two rapid shots into the ledge beneath the operative's boots, sending masonry crumbling into the abyss. She pulled Arthur toward the metal fire escape ladder, urging him to move before the entire building was locked down.
