Chapter 1 - The Weight Within

The rain lashed relentlessly against the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the pediatric ward, casting long, shivering shadows across the sterile walls. Inside the dimly lit room, eight-year-old Leo clutched the edge of his bed, his pale face stained with tears. A heavy, snow-white orthopedic cast encased his entire left forearm, looking monstrously out of place against his fragile frame. Kneeling beside him, his father, Arthur, offered a tense, tight-lipped smile, his tailored charcoal suit contrasting sharply with the raw panic in his son's eyes. Leo’s whole body trembled as he stared down at the plaster, his voice cracking with a desperate, childish terror. He begged his father to cut the cast off immediately, insisting that something alive and moving was trapped beneath the heavy layers. Arthur sighed, gently brushing a lock of messy light brown hair from the boy's forehead while assuring him it was just standard medical procedure. Yet, as Arthur’s fingers brushed the surface of the cast, he felt an unnatural, rhythmic thumping beneath the hard plaster that made his own breath catch in his throat.
