Chapter 9: Ghosts of the Past

While the present was filled with new beginnings, the ghosts of the past required resolution.

A month after Noah's discharge, Arthur took his son on a journey back to the small coastal town where Clara had spent her final years.

The graveyard sat on a grassy hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the sound of crashing waves providing a serene backdrop. Wind rustled through the tall grass as Arthur and Noah walked hand in hand down the stone path, stopping before a modest grey headstone.

Arthur knelt in the grass, laying a bouquet of fresh white lilies beside the stone—Clara's favorite flowers.

Noah stepped forward, setting a hand-drawn picture he had made beside the bouquet. It showed three people holding hands under a bright yellow sun.

"I brought Him, Mom," Noah said softly to the headstone. "He's just like you said. He took care of me and Lily."

Arthur placed his hand on Noah's shoulder, tears blurring his vision as he looked down at the name engraved in the granite.

"I'm sorry it took me so long, Clara," Arthur whispered to the wind. "I was blind to what truly mattered. But I promise you, with everything I have left in this life, I will protect our boy. He will never know fear, hunger, or loneliness again."

The ocean breeze blew softly, rustling the petals of the white lilies, as if carrying a quiet, forgiving answer from the spirit beyond.

Arthur took Noah's hand, and together, they turned and walked back down the hill toward the sunlit path ahead.
