Chapter 12: The Storm Gathers

The peace of the Hudson Valley home was interrupted three weeks later when a headline appeared on the front page of the Daily Financial Times:
"EMPIRE OR ARTIFICE? ARTHUR STERLING’S FABRICATED REDEMPTION"
The article, written by Mark Briggs, alleged that Arthur had used offshore corporate accounts to pay off state officials to expedite Noah's adoption, bypassing legal protocols and using his wealth to manipulate the child welfare system.
Television crews parked outside the gates of the country estate, their news vans blocking the quiet dirt road.
Inside the house, Arthur sat at the kitchen island, staring at the newspaper clipping. Julian sat across from him, his laptop open, reviewing the legal defense.
"It's all fabricated lies, Arthur," Julian said angrily. "Every dollar used to fund the Clara Sterling Foundation came from your personal, post-tax accounts. The adoption was cleared through proper judicial channels by Judge Adams herself. Davis fed this story to Briggs to destroy your reputation."
"I don't care about my reputation, Julian," Arthur said quietly, looking toward the living room where Noah and Lily were sitting on the rug, looking anxious as they watched the news reporters through the window. "I care about them. They've suffered enough scrutiny for one lifetime."
"We file a defamation suit immediately," Julian urged. "We bring out the bank records and force a public retraction."
"No," Arthur said, standing up. "A lawsuit takes months and keeps them in the headlines. I'm going to face this head-on. Call a press conference at Sterling Tower for tomorrow morning."
"Arthur, you'll be throwing yourself to the wolves," Julian warned.

Arthur looked at Noah, who was looking up at him with big, trusting hazel eyes.
"I'm not throwing myself to the wolves, Julian," Arthur said softly. "I'm standing up for my family."
