Chapter 5: The Boardroom Rebellion

At 4:30 PM, the boardroom on the 50th floor of Sterling Tower was filled with tension. Twelve directors sat around a massive mahogany table, murmuring anxiously as television monitors displayed stock tickers reacting to rumors of Arthur Sterling's sudden disappearance.

Richard Davis, a senior board member with grey hair and an ambitious streak, stood at the head of the table, tapping his pen against a glass.

"Gentlemen, please," Davis declared loudly. "Arthur Sterling has abandoned his fiduciary duty at the most critical juncture in this company's history. The merger with Global Logistics hangs by a thread. I move that we declare Arthur unfit to fulfill his duties and appoint an interim chairman immediately."

"Seconded," another board member called out.

"Before you cast that vote, Richard, you might want to look at the doorway," a calm voice rang out.

The boardroom doors swung open. Arthur Sterling stepped inside.

He was still wearing his rumpled grey suit, without a tie, his hair unstyled, and his eyes bloodshot from hours of crying. He looked nothing like the polished titan of industry they were used to seeing, yet his presence commanded instant silence.

"Arthur," Davis stammered, caught off guard. "Where have you been? The merger—"

"Cancel the merger," Arthur said flatly, walking to the head of the table.

Gasps filled the room.

"Have you lost your mind?" Davis shouted. "That deal represents fifty percent of our projected growth!"

"That deal requires me to spend eight months a year traveling abroad," Arthur replied, looking around the room at the men he had called colleagues for decades. "I have spent forty-five years of my life building this company. I thought success was measured in market caps, dividend yields, and global dominance. I was wrong."

He placed a hand on the mahogany table. "Today, I found out I have an eight-year-old son. He is lying in a hospital bed because he nearly died trying to find me. From this day forward, Sterling Global Logistics is no longer my primary concern."

"You can't just step down!" Davis protested.

"I'm not stepping down as owner," Arthur corrected calmly. "I am stepping down as CEO. I am appointing Julian Vance as acting chief executive. He understands the operations, and he understands humanity—something I forgot a long time ago."

Arthur turned and walked toward the exit, stopping at the door to look back at the stunned board members. "Good day, gentlemen. Build your empire. I have a family to build."
