Chapter 10: The Country Home

Six months later.

The autumn air was crisp and clear in the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley. Sunlight filtered through red and gold maple leaves, casting warm patterns across the porch of a restored Victorian farmhouse.

Laughter echoed from the expansive backyard. Noah, now fully recovered and radiating health, was running across the grass with a four-month-old golden retriever puppy named Barnaby. Lily was right behind him, her laughter ringing out clear and bright under the blue sky.

Arthur sat on the porch rocking chair, wearing a comfortable wool sweater and jeans—a stark departure from the tailored three-piece suits he had worn for thirty years. On his lap rested a tablet displaying company updates sent by Julian.

Sterling Global Logistics was thriving under Julian's empathetic leadership, focusing on humanitarian supply chains and sustainable shipping. Arthur stayed on as an advisor, but he hadn't stepped foot in Sterling Tower in months.

The back screen door creaked open, and Mrs. Gable, a warm, middle-aged woman whom Arthur had hired as a housekeeper and tutor, stepped out carrying a tray of warm apple cider.

"They've been running for two hours, Mr. Sterling," she smiled, watching the children play. "I don't know where they get the energy."

"Neither do I, Mrs. Gable," Arthur chuckled, setting his tablet aside to take a mug of cider. "But it's the best sound in the world."

Barnaby suddenly bolted up the porch steps, his muddy paws leaving prints on the clean wooden floorboards, followed closely by Noah and Lily.

"Dad! Barnaby caught a frog!" Noah shouted excitedly, pointing at the puppy, who was barking enthusiastically at a small green amphibian hopping near the garden hose.

Arthur stood up, kneeling down beside the children, completely unconcerned about the mud getting on his trousers. "Let's see it, chief. Is it a magic frog?"

"Definitely magic," Lily declared, her eyes bright with joy.

Arthur looked at their mud-stained faces, their bright, healthy smiles, and felt a profound sense of gratitude. The cold, silent mansion of his past was gone, replaced by a life rich in noise, color, and unconditional love.
