Chapter 3: Critical Hours

St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and lingering anxiety. The bright fluorescent lights hummed overhead as Arthur paced the length of the surgical waiting room, his jacket discarded, his tie loosened, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

Lily sat on a vinyl chair in the corner, clutching a paper cup of warm hot chocolate that a nurse had brought her. Her eyes followed Arthur's restless pacing.

"Is Noah going to die?" she asked quietly.

Arthur stopped. He looked at the girl, realizing how much trauma her young mind had endured today. He walked over and sat in the chair beside her.

"No," Arthur said firmly, though his own heart was drowning in uncertainty. "The doctors are very smart. They are fixing his head right now. He's strong, isn't he?"

"He's the strongest boy at St. Michael's," Lily said, a small flicker of pride brightening her pale face. "When the big kids tried to take my lunch, Noah fought them off. He told me his dad was a powerful man who would come rescue us both one day."

Arthur lowered his head, a wave of shame washing over him. While he was sitting in corner offices making deals that altered corporate landscapes, his son was fighting bullies in an underfunded group home, clinging to a photograph of a father who didn't even know he existed.

The heavy double doors of the surgical wing swung open, and a doctor in blue scrubs stepped out, pulling down his mask.

Arthur stood up instantly. "Doctor? How is he?"

"Mr. Sterling?" The doctor checked his chart. "The surgery went well. We relieved the pressure from the subdural hematoma caused by the impact. He sustained a concussion and two fractured ribs, but there is no permanent brain damage. He is currently stable in the Pediatric ICU."

Arthur let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for years. He sank back onto the chair, burying his face in his hands as a quiet sob escaped his chest.

"Can I see him?" Arthur asked, looking up.

"Only one at a time for now," the doctor replied gently. "He isn't awake yet, but his vitals are strong."
