Chapter 9: The Isolated Terminal

The private study was located on the second floor, a room lined with dark wood paneling, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and a massive mahogany desk facing a large arched window that overlooked the manicured front gardens. Unlike the modern minimalist aesthetic of the rest of the mansion, this room retained the traditional, old-world elegance of the Vance family legacy.
Lorenzo sat down in the leather executive chair, sliding an old, disconnected desktop computer forward from the corner of the desk. The machine ran on a closed-circuit operating system, entirely severed from the internet or the estate's primary network grid.
Clara stood beside him as Lorenzo inserted the silver flash drive into the front USB port of the terminal. The screen flickered to life, displaying a simple command prompt window. A series of encrypted directories scrolled down the monitor in rapid succession, revealing file names, access logs, and encrypted text documents.
"She wasn't just siphoning funds," Lorenzo muttered, his eyes tracking the scrolling data with intense concentration. "Look at this directory—Project Janus."
Clara leaned closer, her eyes scanning the monitor. "Project Janus? That sounds like a corporate restructuring initiative, but why would it be stored on a personal backup drive?"
Lorenzo clicked on the main folder, revealing a series of scanned legal documents, correspondence transcripts, and audio files. He double-clicked an audio file labeled Transcript_Meeting_March_12.wav.
A harsh, digitized audio clip began to play through the small desktop speakers. Valenia’s voice filled the quiet room, crisp and calculating.
"The father is entirely manageable once his attention is divided," Valenia’s recorded voice stated smoothly. "The child's separation anxiety is developing precisely on schedule. Within six months, the legal petitions for conservatorship will be ironclad, regardless of his corporate standing. Once the trust is restructured under my oversight, the liquidation of the secondary assets can proceed without interference."
A second voice responded on the recording—a man's deep, unfamiliar baritone. "And Vance himself? If he uncovers the medical discrepancies before the filings are finalized?"

"He won't," Valenia's voice replied with chilling confidence. "He's too busy managing his global logistics contracts. As long as the domestic staff remains compliant and compliant housemaids don't ask questions, the house will run itself right into my hands."
Lorenzo hit the spacebar, cutting the audio off mid-sentence. The silence that followed in the study was heavy, suffocating, and absolute. The man on the recording hadn't been identified by name, but the implications were staggering. Valenia hadn't been acting alone; she had been part of a coordinated corporate conspiracy designed to systematically dismantle the Vance family estate from the inside out.
