Chapter 7: Colors in the Solarium

The solarium was the brightest room in the entire mansion, a massive glass-domed conservatory filled with towering ferns, citrus trees, and climbing ivy. Sunlight poured in from every angle, warming the antique terracotta tiles beneathfoot. Chloe sat at a low white wooden table in the center of the room, an array of watercolor paints and thick paper spread out before her.
Clara walked in quietly, carrying a tray with a glass of fresh lemonade and a small plate of sliced apples. She set the tray down on the edge of the table without interrupting the intense concentration on the young girl's face. Chloe’s brush swept across the paper, mixing bright blues and yellows in a chaotic, joyful swirl.
"How is the masterpiece coming along, Chloe?" Clara asked softly, pulling up a small wicker stool and sitting beside her.
Chloe paused, holding the paintbrush suspended in the air. She looked down at her painting, which featured a bright yellow sun breaking through dark, swirling gray clouds. "It's the sky after the storm," she answered seriously, looking up at Clara with her mother's sharp, observant eyes. "Daddy said storms don't last forever, even when they feel really big and scary."
"Your father is entirely right," Clara smiled, handing her a napkin to wipe a smudge of blue paint from her chin. "Storms just clear the air so the flowers can grow better. Do you want to add some green vines to the bottom of the painting?"
"Yes, like the ones in the conservatory," Chloe agreed, dipping her brush into a rich emerald pigment. She worked diligently for a few moments before stopping, her small shoulders slumping slightly. "Clara? Is Valenia ever coming back?"
The question hung in the warm air of the solarium. Clara placed her hands flat on the table, choosing her words carefully to ensure honesty without terrifying the child. "No, Chloe. Valenia made choices that broke your father's trust and yours. She is not allowed in this house anymore. Your father and I are going to make sure this place is safe for you, always."
Chloe nodded slowly, seeming to process the finality of the statement. A visible weight seemed to lift from the little girl's posture, and she returned her attention to her painting with renewed focus. The fear that had defined her daily life for months was slowly being replaced by the steady comfort of routine and safety.

As Clara watched her paint, she noticed a faint glint of metal resting on the high stone windowsill behind the potted lemon trees. Frowning, she stood up and walked over, pushing aside the thick green leaves. Resting on the sill was a small, silver flash drive, half-hidden beneath a dusty gardening glove. It was an older model, the kind used for secure physical data transfers—the exact type Valenia might have used to back up files before she left.
Clara picked it up carefully, the metal casing cool to the touch. She pocketed it discreetly just as the heavy oak door at the end of the solarium clicked open, and Lorenzo walked in, his expression calm but alert.
