Chapter 10: Unmasking the Accomplice

Lorenzo stared at the frozen audio waveform on the monitor, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the mahogany desk. The tattoos on his hands seemed to pulse under the dim light of the study as his mind raced, connecting disparate pieces of information that had seemed minor or unrelated over the past year.
"Do you recognize the voice of the man on the recording?" Clara asked quietly, breaking the heavy silence. She remained standing beside him, her professional composure holding firm despite the shocking nature of the revelation.
"I don't," Lorenzo said, his voice dangerously low. "The audio compression is heavy, and the cadence is deliberately restrained. But whoever he is, he had access to corporate legal templates and insider knowledge of my trust agreements. That means there is someone inside Vance Global Logistics working in tandem with her."
"A corporate mole," Clara deduced instantly. "Someone currently on your executive board or within your legal compliance department. Valenia couldn't have executed those offshore transfers without a sign-off from someone with institutional clearance."
Lorenzo nodded slowly, reaching out to mouse over the remaining files in the directory. He clicked on a spreadsheet labeled Asset_Distribution_Matrix.xlsx. The spreadsheet opened, displaying a complex web of shell companies, real estate holdings, and subsidiary accounts. But what caught his eye wasn't the financial data itself—it was the metadata stamped at the bottom of the file properties.

Lorenzo’s breath caught in his throat. Marcus Sterling. His senior vice president of legal affairs, a man he had mentored, promoted, and trusted implicitly for over a decade. Marcus had been one of the very few people invited to the estate following his wife's passing, ostensibly to offer condolences and assist with initial probate paperwork. In reality, he had been planting the seeds of a hostile takeover disguised as estate management.
"Marcus Sterling," Lorenzo said the name aloud, the realization tasting like ash in his mouth. "My head of legal compliance. He was dining with us just three weeks ago, discussing the expansion of our European shipping lanes."
"He thought you were entirely distracted by your family obligations," Clara said, her analytical mind immediately shifting to strategy. "If Marcus is the internal accomplice, he’s likely preparing to file the fraudulent conservatorship papers through a third-party probate court as soon as Valenia reaches out to him."
"Not anymore," Lorenzo said firmly, standing up from the desk so abruptly that his leather chair rolled back and hit the paneled wall. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out his encrypted corporate phone. "If Marcus thinks he has the upper hand, we’re going to give him exactly what he expects—an invitation to the mansion to review the final probate documents."
Clara watched him intently. "A trap."

"A very polite, very legal trap," Lorenzo corrected, his stern expression returning with renewed intensity. "If Marcus steps foot onto this property to sign off on fraudulent documents, we’ll have him on record attempting to execute corporate and domestic fraud. But I need your help to set the stage, Clara."
"Tell me what you need," Clara replied without a moment's hesitation, her posture straight and resolute.
