Chapter 3: Unlocking the Past

The heavy oak door swung inward with a low groan, revealing a spiraling stone staircase descending into absolute darkness. A damp breeze drifted up from below, carrying the distinct scent of aging parchment and damp earth. Lorenzo reached out and flipped a switch on the stone wall, illuminating a dim string of overhead Edison bulbs that cast long, distorted shadows down the steps.

"Stay here," Lorenzo instructed gently, looking back at Clara.

"No, Mr. Vance," Clara replied, stepping forward despite the ache in her knees. "You need someone who knows what she filed away. Valenia didn't just hide financial records down here. She kept the medical logs from the hospice where your late wife spent her final months."

Lorenzo’s expression darkened further, his jaw tightening until the muscle ticked. Without another word, he descended the stairs, his sharp leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. Clara followed closely behind, her yellow rubber gloves still on, serving as a strange, practical armor in the gothic gloom of the sub-crypt.

The room at the bottom was surprisingly spacious, lined with mahogany filing cabinets and reinforced glass display cases holding centuries of Vance family heirlooms. But in the center of the room sat a modern steel desk that clashed violently with the historic surroundings. Atop the desk sat an open laptop, its screen glowing in the dim light, displaying a series of scanned bank transfer receipts and medical proxy documents.

Lorenzo walked directly to the desk. He leaned down, his eyes scanning the glowing text. The numbers on the screen represented massive outflows of capital, systematically siphoned from Chloe’s trust fund and routed through shell corporations registered overseas under Valenia’s maiden name. Worse still were the medical documents—prescriptions for mild sedatives, doubled in dosage, intended for a child who had merely been grieving the loss of her mother.

"She was drugging her," Lorenzo whispered, the words barely audible, loaded with a terrifying, controlled fury. "She was making Chloe seem unstable so she could legally petition for guardianship of the estate."

"She told the nanny before me that Chloe was prone to hysterical episodes," Clara added, stepping up beside the desk and pointing to a highlighted paragraph on the screen. "Look at the dates, sir. Every time you left the country for business negotiations, the dosage instructions changed. I found the discarded prescription bottles behind the laundry room vents."

Lorenzo reached out and slammed the laptop shut, the sound echoing sharply off the stone walls. He straightened up, his towering presence filling the small underground chamber. The betrayal was complete, systemic, and deeply personal. He had trusted Valenia to care for his home and his daughter after the tragic passing of his wife, believing her sophistication was a sign of reliability. Instead, he had invited a predator into the heart of his family.

"We go back upstairs," Lorenzo said, his voice deadly calm. "Valenia thinks she still has an exit strategy."
