Chapter 8: The Hidden Flash Drive

Lorenzo stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes taking in the tranquil scene before him—Chloe humming quietly over her watercolor paper, and Clara standing by the lemon trees with her hand resting lightly in her pocket. He could read the subtle shift in Clara’s posture; the slight tension in her shoulders signaled that she had found something unexpected.
"Everything peaceful in here?" Lorenzo asked, keeping his voice low so as not to startle his daughter.
"Very peaceful, Mr. Vance," Clara replied evenly, stepping away from the windowsill and walking over to join him near the doorway. She lowered her voice further as she stepped out of Chloe's earshot. "I found something on the sill behind the citrus trees."
She pulled the small silver flash drive from her pocket and held it out on the flat of her palm. Lorenzo stared at it, his brow furrowing as he recognized the casing.
"Valenia used these for off-site data encryption," Lorenzo said quietly, his jaw tightening. "She told me months ago that she lost the master drive for the estate's security network during a trip downtown. If this is what I think it is, it contains not just financial records, but the master access codes to every security camera and digital lock in the entire compound."
"Which means she still has a digital backdoor into the mansion," Clara pointed out, her voice steady and analytical. "Even though she's locked out physically, she could potentially override the firewall from an outside network if she has the decryption keys."
Lorenzo took the flash drive from her hand, his fingers brushing briefly against hers. The contact was brief, but it underscored the quiet partnership that had forged between them over the past forty-eight hours—a partnership built on mutual survival, trust, and a shared dedication to protecting the household.
"We need to wipe the local server and reset the network architecture immediately," Lorenzo said, his tone decisive. "I'll call the lead IT security consultant to lock down the system from our end. But before I do that, I need to know what's on this drive."
"Bring it to the private study," Clara suggested. "We can plug it into an isolated terminal that isn't connected to the main server network. That way, if there's any malicious script embedded in the drive, it won't be able to infect the house's infrastructure."
Lorenzo nodded in agreement. He looked back toward the table, where Chloe was now happily washing her brushes in a small plastic cup of water. "Chloe, sweetheart, Clara and I need to go handle some computer work in the study for a little while. Would you like Mrs. Gable to bring your lunch up to the reading nook when it's ready?"
May you like
"Yes, please!" Chloe beamed, holding up her finished painting of the sun breaking through the clouds. "Look, Daddy! I painted us a sunny day."
Lorenzo smiled warmly, walking over to inspect the artwork and praise his daughter before stepping out of the solarium with Clara, closing the white double doors securely behind them.
