Chapter 2: The Secrets of the Chapel Vault

Lorenzo stood up slowly, the heavy brass key still clutched tightly in his palm. The cold realization of betrayal settled heavily over his broad shoulders as he looked down at Valenia, who was hastily gathering her composure near the foyer table. Her chest rose and fell rapidly beneath the shimmering satin of her dress, but the initial shock had given way to a calculating, defensive glare.
"You're making a catastrophic mistake, Lorenzo," Valenia hissed, her voice low and venomous. "Trusting a hired domestic over the woman who has stood by your side for three years. That little girl upstairs doesn't even know what's good for her."
"Silence," Lorenzo commanded, a single word that carried enough raw power to make Valenia flinch. He turned his attention back to the maid, who was slowly pushing herself up from the marble floor with the help of her yellow rubber-gloved hands. Her wet hair framed a face pale with exhaustion, yet her eyes burned with a fierce, unwavering loyalty.
"Can you walk?" Lorenzo asked quietly, his tone devoid of the harshness he usually reserved for the staff.
"I can," the maid whispered, brushing off her damp apron. "My name is Clara, Mr. Vance. And I think you already know that Valenia's stories about the inheritance and the missing funds were nothing but an elaborate fabrication to cover her own tracks."
Valenia let out a sharp, brittle laugh. "Clara? Oh, how touching. The little liar has a name now. Go ahead, Lorenzo. Check the vault. You'll find it empty, and you'll find out just how much damage your precious employee has caused."
Lorenzo ignored Valenia entirely. He motioned for Clara to follow him down the long, dimly lit corridor that led toward the eastern wing of the sprawling estate. The grand chandelier's light faded behind them as they entered the older, stone-built section of the mansion. The air here was cooler, smelling faintly of old paper, beeswax, and centuries of hidden family history.
Clara walked slightly behind him, her rubber gloves squeaking softly against the polished hardwood floor. Her heart hammered against her ribs, not out of fear for herself, but out of concern for the child upstairs—Lorenzo's young daughter, Chloe, who had been sequestered in the nursery under Valenia's strict, isolating watch for months.

"The key opens the sub-crypt beneath the old family chapel," Clara explained softly, keeping her eyes on Lorenzo's broad back. "Valenia has been visiting it late at night. She told me it was just cleaning supplies, but I heard the lock turn last Tuesday. When she dropped the pitcher just now, it was because she saw me pulling this key from her pocket while she was distracted by your car pulling into the drive."
Lorenzo stopped in front of a heavy oak door concealed behind a tapestry of dark velvet. He inserted the antique key into the ornate iron keyhole. It turned with a deep, satisfying click.
