Chapter 8 - The Gala Arrivals

The sleek silver Rolls-Royce glided through the iron gates with effortless grace, followed by a procession of matching luxury sedans carrying the elite power players of the Wellington board. The high-beam headlights swept across the stone fountain, illuminating the bizarre tableau on the terrace: Marcus pinned to the ground by federal agents, Elena huddled in her ruined green sequin gown, Clara weeping silently against the pillar, and Julian standing in shell-shocked silence beside Arthur.
The rear door of the Rolls-Royce opened, and Victoria Vance, the eighty-year-old matriarch of the board and Arthur’s primary benefactor, stepped out onto the gravel. She leaned heavily on a carved ivory cane, her sharp eyes scanning the chaotic scene with icy detachment.
"Arthur," Victoria called out, her voice carrying an old-money authority that demanded instant silence.
"What is the meaning of this spectacle? The entire board has been waiting inside the grand ballroom for twenty minutes while you play host to a federal raid on the front lawn."
Arthur turned to face the matriarch, his posture instantly shifting back to that of the deferential, faultless corporate servant.
"I apologize for the disruption, Victoria," Arthur said smoothly, walking down the terrace steps to meet her.
"We had an unexpected security breach involving the estate’s financial assets and a serious breach of confidentiality regarding the late Mr. Wellington’s estate."
Victoria stopped, her sharp gaze shifting from Arthur to Julian, then lingering on Clara’s prominent baby bump.
"Confidentiality?" Victoria repeated, her lips tightening into a thin, severe line.
"Julian assured the board last week that all foreign accounts were liquidated and that the family trust was fully consolidated under the firm’s direct oversight. Are you telling me he lied?"
Elena scrambled to her feet, her high-slit emerald gown torn at the hem, her face stained with tears and mascara.
"He didn't act alone!" Elena shouted, pointing a trembling finger directly at Arthur.
"Arthur has the master video feed on his tablet! He was the one in the master bedroom the night the old man died! He’s the one who administered the neurotoxin!"
A collective murmur rippled through the board members who had stepped out of the secondary sedans to watch the confrontation. Victoria’s eyes snapped back to Arthur, her expression hardening into absolute ice.
"Is this true, Arthur?" Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through the murmurs like a knife.
"Did you authorize an investigation into my oldest friend’s death, or are these children simply spinning fairy tales to cover their own crimes?"
Arthur did not blink. He pulled the ruggedized tablet from his pocket, unlocked it with a single thumb press, and handed it directly to Victoria without a moment of hesitation.
"Judge for yourself, Victoria," Arthur replied evenly.
"The footage speaks for itself. However, you should also know that the tablet contains a secondary file detailing the systematic transfer of the board’s contingency funds into an account registered under your own grandniece’s name."
Victoria’s hand trembled slightly as she took the tablet, her eyes locking onto the screen as the video of the master bedroom began to play in the harsh light of the headlights.
"That’s... that’s impossible," Victoria whispered, her aristocratic facade finally cracking.
"I authorized the asset freeze, but I never touched the contingency funds."
Before Arthur could answer, a loud, metallic clatter echoed from the rear of the procession as one of the security guards dropped his riot shield on the pavement.
"Look at the gates!" the guard yelled, pointing frantically toward the dark lane outside.
