Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

The heavy mahogany doors of the Wellington Estate creaked open, spilling a warm amber glow across the manicured lawn and illuminating the rising mist from the stone fountain. Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He glanced frantically between Marcus, who stood with terrifying composure, and Elena, whose panic was now morphing into a desperate, feral survival instinct. The arrival of the security guards at the perimeter fence meant they had less than sixty seconds before the entire elite guest list poured out onto the terrace to witness their public disintegration.

"You are insane," Julian hissed, stepping defensively in front of Elena, though his own knees felt weak.

"If security sees you here, the board will know about the offshore accounts by morning. Everything we negotiated will evaporate."

Clara adjusted the strap of her crimson gown, her expression devoid of any maternal warmth as she observed Julian’s escalating panic. She stepped closer, the rich ruby drop earrings swaying against her pale neck.

"Let them look, Julian," Clara retorted, her tone chillingly calm.

"Transparency was always your least favorite virtue, wasn't it? Especially after you decided to empty my father’s medical trust to fund this pathetic illusion of aristocracy."

Elena let out a sharp, breathless laugh, her fingers digging deeper into her sequin clutch until a sharp pain shot through her palm.

"Your father’s trust?" Elena spat, venom dripping from every syllable.

"That money was funneled through shell companies I personally set up while you were busy playing the grieving heiress in Switzerland. You have no legal claim to a single dime of it."

Marcus raised a single hand, silencing the escalating argument with a subtle gesture that commanded absolute obedience. He checked his luxury silver watch one more time, the second hand ticking loudly in the sudden stillness of the courtyard.

"You can argue about shell companies and legal claims all you want inside the study," Marcus said softly, his eyes fixing on the shadows near the terrace steps.

"However, I wouldn't worry about the board or the security guards right now. I would worry about the person standing behind the glass doors listening to every word you just said."

Julian froze. Slowly, agonizingly, he turned his head toward the mansion’s French doors. Standing in the amber light, silhouette framed by crystal chandeliers, was the unmistakable figure of the senior managing partner holding a phone to his ear.
