Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Fleet

The beam of the high-powered flashlight swept across the stone fountain, painting the startled faces of Julian, Elena, Clara, and Marcus in harsh, brilliant white. Three matte-black SUVs bearing government plates rolled through the open wrought-iron gates in absolute silence, cutting their engines simultaneously before the lead vehicle had even come to a complete stop. The doors clicked open in unison, and four men in identical charcoal suits stepped out into the damp night air, their movements synchronized and terrifyingly precise.
Arthur didn't flinch, but his grip on the Swiss warrant tightened until the heavy paper crumpled in his fist.
"Federal investigators," Arthur murmured, more to himself than to the others.
"How did they get jurisdiction here tonight? The injunction wasn't scheduled to drop until dawn."
Marcus stepped protectively in front of Clara, his calm demeanor finally cracking as he stared at the lead investigator approaching the terrace steps.
"This isn't just about the Swiss accounts anymore," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a tense whisper.
"Someone tipped off the federal prosecutor’s domestic unit with the master encryption keys. Only one person on this property had access to those keys."
Elena’s face drained of all color, her hands dropping to her sides as her green sequin clutch slipped from her fingers and hit the stone paving with a dull thud.
"Not me," Elena breathed, shaking her head frantically as she backed away toward the dark recesses of the terrace.
"I didn't give them anything. Julian, you told me the keys were destroyed!"
Julian couldn't answer. His gaze was fixed on the lead investigator, a tall, gaunt man with sharp gray eyes and a heavy leather briefcase tucked under his arm. As the investigator mounted the stone steps, he bypassed Arthur entirely, walking straight past Marcus and Clara until he stood directly in front of Julian. The man reached into his breast pocket, pulling out a small metallic drive that gleamed dully in the amber porch light.
"Julian Wellington," the investigator said, his voice deep and emotionless.
"You are formally served with a federal seizure order for conspiracy, wire fraud, and the unlawful liquidation of protected medical assets."
The investigator held out the metallic drive for Julian to take, but Julian’s hands remained clamped rigidly at his sides.
"I want my attorney," Julian managed to choke out, his voice trembling violently.
"You can call whoever you like from holding," the investigator replied smoothly.
"However, before you make that call, you might want to look at the secondary file on this drive. It contains the real reason your father-in-law changed his will forty-eight hours before he died."
Clara gasped, stumbling forward as Marcus caught her arm.
"What are you talking about?" Clara demanded, her voice cracking with sudden, raw terror.
"My father died of natural causes."
The investigator turned his cold gray eyes toward Clara, holding up a second document extracted from his leather case.

"According to the toxicology report timestamped last night, Mr. Wellington was poisoned with a synthetic neurotoxin administered through his evening medication."
