Chapter 12 - The Titanium Drive

The heat in the burning archive room felt like an open furnace, baking the moisture from Julian’s lungs with every ragged breath he took. Through the thick, swirling clouds of black smoke, Sarah stood framed by the roaring flames of the mahogany bookshelves, her expression completely devoid of the meek, timid obedience she had displayed during her three years working in Julian’s office. She held the heavy titanium flash drive between her fingers like a loaded weapon.

"Sarah," Julian choked out, coughing violently as he took a cautious step forward across the charred floorboards.

"You... you were on the payroll. I wired your severance to the Cayman accounts just like you asked."

Sarah let out a harsh, bitter laugh that was half-swallowed by the roar of the fire.

"Severance?" Sarah spat, her dark eyes flashing with suppressed fury.

"You paid me hush money to cover up your illicit wire transfers while Arthur was using my credentials to funnel millions into his private Swiss portfolio. I wasn't your assistant, Julian. I was his primary auditor."

Before Julian could process the confession, the ceiling joist above them groaned loudly, showering a cascade of burning embers between them. Sarah didn't flinch. She slipped the titanium drive into the breast pocket of her tactical jacket and reached behind her back, pulling out a heavy iron fire poker.

"Move away from the door, Julian," Sarah ordered, her voice cutting through the crackle of the flames with absolute authority.

"If you try to stop me from walking out of here, I’ll leave this room in ashes—and I’ll make sure your name is at the very top of the coroner’s final casualty list."

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. He looked past Sarah toward the shattered window where the faint, flashing red and blue lights of the federal cruisers could still be seen through the smoke. He knew he had less than a minute before the tactical operatives breached the room from the outside.

"Arthur is already in federal custody, Sarah," Julian lied, trying to keep his voice steady despite the searing heat.

"The game is over. If you take that drive, you’re running alone with a target on your back the size of a billboard."

Sarah’s eyes narrowed, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossing her face for a split second before her expression hardened again.

"Arthur is never truly in custody, Julian," Sarah replied quietly, stepping past the roaring shelf toward the exit.

"He owns the judges, he owns the prosecutors, and by sunrise, he’ll own every single asset this family ever claimed to own."

Suddenly, the heavy oak door behind Sarah burst open, and two federal operatives in tactical gear charged into the room, their weapons leveled directly at her chest.

"Drop the weapon! Hands on your head!" the lead operative roared.

Sarah smiled, a chilling, triumphant expression. Without a moment of hesitation, she tossed the titanium flash drive directly into the open flames of the portable incinerator at her feet, right as the operatives tackled her to the ground.

Julian lunged forward with a desperate cry, plunging his bare hand into the burning incinerator to grab the drive before the digital memory melted away.
