Chapter 3 - The Managing Partner

The amber light from the grand foyer caught the edge of Arthur Pendelton’s silver-rimmed glasses as he stood motionless behind the reinforced glass. Arthur was not just a managing partner; he was the ruthless architect of the Wellington family empire, a man who had buried three corporate scandals and two federal investigations without breaking a sweat. Yet, as Julian stared across the twenty-foot expanse of stone patio, he saw something in Arthur’s eyes that terrified him far more than anger: absolute, chilling disappointment.
Elena’s hand flew to her mouth, stifling a ragged gasp.
"Arthur," Julian choked out, his voice reduced to a breathless whisper as he took an involuntary step backward toward the black Phantom.
"How long... how long have you been standing there?"
Arthur slowly pushed the glass door open, the mechanical click sounding like a gunshot in the quiet night air. He stepped onto the patio, his tailored charcoal suit immaculate, not a single hair out of place. He didn't look at Elena, nor did he acknowledge Clara’s prominent baby bump. His cold, calculating gaze remained locked entirely on Julian.
"Long enough, Julian," Arthur said evenly, his voice carrying the quiet authority of a man who held absolute power over their destinies.
"Long enough to hear that the offshore accounts you swore were liquidated three years ago are not only active, but currently being contested by a secondary claimant."
Marcus inclined his head slightly, a dark, victorious smirk playing on his lips.
"Good evening, Arthur," Marcus greeted smoothly, stepping forward to extend a hand that Arthur pointedly ignored.
"It appears your prized protégé has been keeping a rather expansive ledger of hidden assets. We were just discussing the liquidation terms."
Clara rested both hands on her abdomen, her voice steady and laced with quiet menace.
"Arthur, you told me the audit was complete and that my inheritance was secure," Clara said, stepping into the amber light so Arthur could clearly see the ruby earrings that matched the ones her father had worn the night he signed the revised will.
"Are you going to tell me now that you were unaware of Julian’s little financial diversion?"
Arthur’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking beneath his cleanly shaven cheek. He finally turned his gaze toward Elena, taking in the trembling emerald dress and the terrified look in her eyes.
"The audit was thorough, Clara, based on the documents provided," Arthur replied coldly.
"Documents that appear to have been systematically forged. And speaking of forged documents, Julian, I received an encrypted message twenty minutes ago from the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office."

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat, the world spinning violently around him as Arthur pulled a folded sheet of heavy cream-colored paper from his breast pocket.
