Chapter 1 - The Broken Facade

The night air outside the Wellington Estate felt heavy, smelling faintly of damp stone, blooming nightshade, and expensive French perfume. Near the illuminated stone fountain, the water cascaded in a rhythmic, soothing whisper that sharply contrasted with the sudden, suffocating silence hanging between the four people. Elena stood frozen in her emerald green sequin gown, the plunging V-neckline catching the harsh white glare of the security floodlights. Her fingers clenched so tightly around her green clutch that the delicate fabric threatened to tear under the pressure of her trembling nails.

"Oh my god," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the splashing fountain, her eyes wide with a profound, bone-chilling horror as her jaw dropped slack.

Julian stood just a few feet away beside the sleek black Phantom, his handsome face completely drained of color. He looked stunned, his classic black tuxedo suddenly feeling like a suffocating straitjacket. Across from them stood Clara, breathtaking in her crimson red sequin one-shoulder gown. Despite her prominent baby bump and the ruby drop earrings catching the moonlight, her expression was carved from absolute ice.

Beside her, Marcus slowly lowered his wrist, his gaze shifting away from his luxury silver watch with a chilling, calculated calmness. He stared directly at the figure standing in the shadows beyond the gravel driveway, his breathing steady despite the rising panic around him.

Julian’s chest heaved as he took a ragged step forward, his voice cracking with a mix of fury and sheer disbelief.

"What are you doing here?" Julian demanded, his hands trembling at his sides.

"I thought I made it very clear that you were never to set foot on this property again after what happened in Geneva."

Clara placed a protective, trembling hand over her stomach, her voice cutting through the damp night air like a razor blade.

"Lower your voice, Julian," Clara warned, her eyes narrowing as she stepped closer to the edge of the fountain.

"We didn't come here to argue about Geneva, and you know that perfectly well."

"Then why are you here?" Elena screamed, her composure shattering completely as she flung her hands up in utter disbelief, her emerald dress shimmering under the strobe-like lights of the approaching security vehicles.

"You ruined everything we built, and now you just show up uninvited?"

Marcus finally stepped fully into the light, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

"We didn't come to ruin anything, Elena," Marcus replied smoothly, his eyes locking onto Julian with predatory intensity.

"We came to collect what was stolen from us, starting with the trust fund documents currently locked inside that house."

Julian took a sharp breath, his eyes darting toward the mansion's double doors as they slowly began to open from the inside.
