Chapter 10 - The Fifty-Million-Dollar Trap

The words hung in the chilling night air, silencing even the hum of the tactical vehicle engines. Fifty million dollars. Julian stared at Arthur in sheer disbelief, the horrifying puzzle pieces finally clicking together in his mind. The mysterious life insurance rider he had signed without reading during the merger negotiations last week wasn't a standard corporate protection clause—it was a death sentence disguised as a formality. Arthur hadn't just framed him for the old man’s murder; he had engineered a financial feedback loop where Julian’s execution would literally enrich the firm beyond measure.

Elena let out a choked, hysterical gasp, falling to her knees in the dirt as her hands clawed desperately at her sequin gown.

"No... no, this isn't real," Elena muttered, rocking back and forth in total psychological collapse.

"We’re going to prison. We’re going to die in there because of you, Julian! You and your stupid greed!"

Julian didn't answer her. He couldn't. His entire body felt paralyzed as the tactical operatives pushed Arthur toward the back of the unmarked black van. Arthur didn't look back; he simply stepped inside with the calm, dignified composure of a man who had already won a game nobody else knew they were playing. The heavy metal doors slammed shut with a definitive, bone-chilling thud, and the van immediately reversed out of the semicircle, disappearing down the private road as quickly as it had arrived.

Clara stood frozen near the edge of the terrace, her hands resting protectively over her prominent baby bump as she stared at the empty space where Arthur had just been standing. Her face was pale, carved from marble and hardened by a profound, unforgiving fury.

"Marcus," Clara whispered, her voice dangerously quiet.

"Get the car."

Marcus stood up from the gravel, brushing the dust from his black tuxedo pants with deliberate slowness. His dark eyes flicked toward the remaining federal agents who were now securing the perimeter and cataloging the evidence.

"The car won't get us past the federal blockade, Clara," Marcus replied, his tone grim as he looked at the tactical commander conferring with Victoria Vance near the Rolls-Royce.

"Every exit from this estate has been sealed under emergency counter-terrorism protocols. We are trapped here until dawn."

Victoria leaned heavily on her driver’s arm, her elderly face contorted with shock and rage as she limped over to where Julian was still kneeling on the ground. She looked down at him with utter disgust, lifting her hand and striking him across the face with a dry, stinging slap that echoed off the stone fountain.

"You pathetic fool," Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with fury.

"You brought this snake into our house, gave him the keys to the vault, and handed him the legal instruments to destroy three generations of wealth in a single evening."

Julian slowly raised his hand to his stinging cheek, tasting the faint metallic tang of blood on his lip. He didn't flinch. He looked up at the matriarch with dead, hollow eyes.

"The vault was already empty before I got here, Victoria," Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of all defense.

"Arthur cleared the primary accounts six months ago. We were all just playing the parts he wrote for us."

Before Victoria could reply, the commander’s radio crackled to life with a loud burst of static, followed by a voice that made every federal agent on the scene instantly draw their weapons.

"Command, this is Unit Four. The perimeter sensor at the north gate just tripped. A secondary team is entering the main archive room right now—and they’re not federal."
