Chapter 9 - The Poisoned Air

The sweet, chemical scent of the aerosolized paralytic agent filled the laboratory within seconds, burning the back of the throat and making the eyes water.

Jonathan collapsed forward onto the polished concrete floor, his fingers twitching uncontrollably as the neurotoxin began to shut down his nervous system. He dropped the charred ledger, his vision blurring rapidly as the overhead lights began to pulse in a rhythmic, dizzying strobe.

"Dad... please..." Jonathan choked out, his voice reduced to a pathetic wheeze as paralysis locked his jaw.

Arthur Vance stood behind the reinforced glass partition on the far side of the room, adjusting the straps of his gas mask with clinical precision. He looked through the thick glass at his dying son and Stallone with utter detachment, picking up a remote control from the desk.

Stallone didn't fall. Drawing upon decades of grueling combat conditioning and survival training, he clamped his mouth shut, holding his breath while his powerful lungs fought against the initial wave of dizziness. He scanned the laboratory walls frantically for the manual ventilation override or an emergency pressure release valve.

Through the distorted filter of his mask, Arthur spoke into the intercom system, his voice echoing mechanically through the laboratory speakers.

"It's useless, Miller," Arthur’s amplified voice rasped. "This compound was engineered by military contractors for rapid containment. Within sixty seconds, your respiratory system will fail completely, and your heart will stop. By morning, the hospital maintenance crew will find two unfortunate victims of an accidental gas leak in the old utility sub-level."

Stallone took two heavy, measured steps toward the glass partition, his massive frame shaking slightly under the strain of oxygen deprivation. He knew he didn't have sixty seconds. He had maybe fifteen before his muscles gave out entirely.

With a sudden burst of sheer adrenaline, Stallone grabbed a heavy steel oxygen cylinder from the examination table, hoisted it above his head with both arms, and hurled it directly at the center of the reinforced glass partition with superhuman force.

CRASH!

The heavy steel cylinder struck the glass with the force of a battering ram. A spiderweb of fractures instantly splintered across the entire surface, though the glass held its frame.

Arthur flinched behind the barrier, his calm demeanor finally cracking as he pressed a button to summon armed security to the outer sector.

Stallone didn't hesitate. He grabbed a second steel cylinder, stepped back, and drove it like a spear into the exact center of the fractured glass spiderweb.

With a deafening explosion of shattering laminate and tempered shards, the glass partition blew inward, showering Arthur’s control station with razor-sharp debris and thick white dust.

Before Arthur could draw the sidearm from his lab coat holster, Stallone vaulted through the shattered frame, landing heavily on top of the older doctor and pinning him to the floor with crushing weight.

Arthur gasped for air as Stallone’s massive hand wrapped firmly around his throat, cutting off his airway just as the ventilation system hissed to a sudden, grinding halt, purging the remaining poison gas from the room.

Stallone leaned down, his face inches from Arthur’s terrified eyes, his breathing heavy and controlled.

"Your time is up, Arthur," Stallone whispered, his voice dark with finality. "Now you’re going to tell me where the master server is hidden."

Arthur struggled beneath Stallone’s grip, his face turning purple, before managing to rasp out a chilling response that shattered every remaining illusion.
