Chapter 13 - Sirens on the Surface

The distant wail of multiple police sirens grew rapidly louder, transforming from a faint, mournful echo into a deafening wall of sound that vibrated through the concrete foundations of the hospital. Flashing red and blue strobe lights painted the damp brick walls of the subterranean laboratory in frantic, alternating bursts of color.
Judge Thomas Sterling stood frozen, his service pistol still raised and trembling slightly as he stared up at the ceiling. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking older, frail, and utterly cornered.
"You're bluffing," Sterling hissed, though his voice lacked any conviction. "Local law enforcement is under our payroll. No patrol car enters this facility without my direct clearance."
"Local police, maybe," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the shattered doorway behind the tactical squad. "But federal internal affairs and the state attorney general's strike force answer to a different chain of command."
Sterling whipped around, lowering his pistol slightly as three heavily armed state troopers in full riot gear stepped into the laboratory, followed by a middle-aged woman wearing a sharp charcoal business suit and an expression of absolute professional fury. This was Special Prosecutor Diane Vance—no relation to Arthur, but the lead investigator heading the statewide anti-corruption task force.
Prosecutor Vance looked around the devastated laboratory, taking in the shattered glass, the subdued operatives, and finally resting her piercing gaze directly on Judge Sterling and Arthur Vance.
"Judge Thomas Sterling," Prosecutor Vance announced clearly, holding up an official arrest warrant bearing the state seal. "You are under arrest for federal corruption, conspiracy to commit human trafficking, and obstruction of justice."
Sterling lowered his weapon slowly, his hand dropping to his side as the reality of his total defeat settled in. He looked at Arthur Vance with murderous hatred. "You incompetent fool. You said the security protocols were impenetrable."
Arthur didn't reply. He slumped against the console, staring blankly at the floor as two state troopers moved in with heavy zip-ties to secure his wrists.
Stallone lowered his hands, walking slowly over to Prosecutor Vance and extracting the silver flash drive and the signed bank transfer slips from his inner pocket, handing them directly into her outstretched palm.
"Everything you need to dismantle the syndicate is right here," Stallone said quietly. "Every adoption record, every financial ledger, every offshore account."
Prosecutor Vance accepted the flash drive with profound respect, nodding slowly. "We've been hunting this network for three years, Mr. Miller. We just didn't have anyone brave enough to walk through the fire to get the proof."
On the floor nearby, Jonathan pushed himself up into a sitting position, his face bruised and tear-stained. He looked across the room at his father, who was being hauled toward the service elevator in zip-ties.
"Dad," Jonathan called out, his voice cracking with unbearable sorrow. "Was any of it real? Or were we all just numbers on a balance sheet to you?"
Arthur didn't even turn his head to look back as the elevator doors closed around him and the state troopers, sealing his fate forever in silence.
Prosecutor Vance turned back to Stallone, her expression turning grave as she pointed toward the ceiling. "There's still the matter of the newborn upstairs. The family that bought the child is waiting in the VIP parking garage with a private transport team. They haven't realized the trap has sprung yet."
Stallone’s eyes hardened into cold steel. He turned immediately toward the service stairs.

"Then let's go finish this," Stallone said.
