Chapter 12 - The Federal Trap

The red and blue tactical laser sights danced erratically across Stallone’s dark suit, creating a spiderweb of lethal precision inside the smoke-filled laboratory. Four heavily armed operatives in black unmarked tactical gear fanned out into the room, their weapons shouldered and primed for immediate lethal engagement.
Leading the squad was not a local beat cop or a syndicate enforcer, but a man wearing the crisp, dark navy suit of a senior federal marshal, his badge gleaming proudly on his left lapel. His graying hair was slicked back, and his eyes carried the cold, calculating expression of a seasoned bureaucrat who had survived decades of political corruption.
It was Judge Thomas Sterling in person.
Sterling stepped through the shattered glass partition, his polished leather shoes crunching softly against the debris. He looked down briefly at Arthur Vance, who was still struggling to catch his breath against the console, before turning his unbroken gaze directly onto Stallone.
"Well, Sergeant Miller," Sterling said smoothly, his voice carrying the calm, practiced cadence of a courtroom magistrate. "I must admit, you're harder to get rid of than a bad cold. Breaking into a restricted hospital sub-level, assaulting a chief of surgery, and tampering with federal investigation files. That's a long list of felonies."
Stallone stood his ground, his massive frame blocking Jonathan, who was still slumped against the wall, clutching his bruised ribs. Stallone's hands remained empty and visible at his sides, his breathing slow and controlled.
"You're out of jurisdiction, Sterling," Stallone replied, his voice steady and resonant. "This isn't a courtroom. This is a human trafficking ring operating under the protection of your federal charter."
Sterling let out a low, condescending chuckle, shaking his head slowly. "Jurisdiction is a construct for people who don't understand how power actually works, Miller. You’re holding a flash drive containing encrypted hospital records, yes. But do you really think any court in this country will authenticate data recovered by an unverified vigilante who just assaulted two respectable medical professionals?"
Jonathan lifted his head from the floor, his eyes blazing with sudden fury as he looked at the judge. "You promised my father protection! You said the adoption shipments would never be traced back to the family!"
Sterling shot Jonathan a withering, glacial glance. "Your father outlived his usefulness the moment he let you bungle the delivery upstairs. People who make mistakes in our line of work don't get pension plans, Jonathan. They get medical retirements."
Without warning, Sterling flicked his wrist toward the two operatives standing nearest the door.
"Take them into custody," Sterling ordered coldly. "And ensure they don't survive the transfer to the county lockup."
The operatives stepped forward instantly, raising their assault rifles to use the heavy steel butts as clubs to subdue Stallone before he could move.
Stallone didn't wait. With blinding, explosive speed, he sidestepped the first operative's swing, grabbed the barrel of the assault rifle, and wrenched it upward with enough force to dislocate the man's shoulder.
As the second operative lunged forward with a tactical baton, Stallone delivered a devastating roundhouse kick directly to his chest, sending the man crashing backward into the computer racks in a shower of sparks and shattered plastic.
Sterling’s calm facade vanished instantly. He drew a heavy caliber service pistol from his shoulder holster with trembling hands, pointing it directly at Stallone’s forehead.
"One more step, Miller, and I'll blow your head clean off your shoulders!" Sterling screamed, his political composure completely shattered by primal panic.
Stallone stopped dead in his tracks, raising his hands slowly, while a faint, knowing smile crossed his weather-beaten face.
"You're too late, Sterling," Stallone whispered, nodding toward the wall safe behind the judge. "The moment we opened that safe, the live backup feed didn't go to the syndicate servers... it went straight to the live press pool outside the emergency entrance."

Sterling froze, his finger tightening on the trigger as the muffled sound of approaching police sirens and flashing strobe lights began to echo down from the street level above.
