Chapter 8 - The Father's Sanctuary

The underground laboratory hummed with the quiet, expensive purr of high-end medical servers and climate-control units. Rows of glowing computer monitors lined the back wall, displaying real-time data feeds from the maternity ward directly overhead.
Arthur Vance didn't look like a cornered criminal; he looked like a king in his castle, surveying his domain with absolute, undisturbed authority. He slowly placed his silver pen down on the stainless-steel examination table, his piercing blue eyes locking onto his son, then shifting slowly to Stallone.
"Well, if it isn't Sergeant Miller," Arthur said, his voice dripping with mild amusement. "Or do people still call you by your old call sign? I thought you retired from playing the righteous avenger twenty years ago after that mess in the Balkans."
Stallone stepped fully into the laboratory, his posture relaxed yet ready for violence. "Retirement is for men who didn't leave a trail of broken lives behind them, Arthur. You built an empire on trafficking infants from vulnerable mothers, and you used this hospital as your personal storefront."
Jonathan stumbled into the room behind Stallone, his face twisted in a mixture of guilt and desperate validation. "Dad... they know everything. The ledger, the safe house records, the buyers downtown. It's all over!"
Arthur sighed softly, shaking his head with a look of profound disappointment, as if addressing a slow student in a medical seminar.
"Shut up, Jonathan," Arthur said coldly, the warmth vanishing instantly from his voice. "You were always the weakest link in this family. I gave you a medical degree, a director’s salary, and a seat on the board, and you still managed to gamble away your inheritance to loan sharks who treat human beings like commodities."
Jonathan recoiled as if struck physically, clutching the charred ledger against his ribs. "You knew about my debts? You let those men come to the hospital?"
"I let you hang yourself, son," Arthur replied evenly, walking slowly around the examination table. "Every great institution requires sacrifices to survive. The elite families of this city pay millions to ensure their bloodlines remain pristine, adopting healthy infants through our private network while the public charity wards absorb the statistical anomalies. It’s not cruelty, Jonathan. It’s biological management."
Stallone stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Jonathan’s trembling shoulder to steady him. "Management? You stole newborn babies from mothers who were told their children didn't survive childbirth. That's not management, Arthur. That's a slaughterhouse."
Arthur smiled thinly, reaching behind his back toward a concealed wall-mounted panel. "You always were too sentimental for the modern world, Miller. That’s why you lost your command, and why you're going to lose your life right here, where no one will ever find the pieces."
With a sudden, aggressive motion, Arthur slammed his palm down onto a red emergency toggle switch on the wall panel.
Above them, the heavy steel reinforced doors of the laboratory slammed shut with a thunderous crash, locking automatically from the outside with a series of heavy mechanical bolts. Simultaneously, a low-pitched hiss began to fill the room as colorless, odorless gas started venting from the ceiling grates.
Jonathan dropped to his knees, coughing violently as the first wave of the paralytic agent hit the air. "Dad... what are you... what are you doing?"
May you like
"Putting you both to sleep," Arthur said calmly, putting on a gas mask as the room began to fill with the lethal vapor. "Permanently."
