Chapter 4 - The Van in the Bay

The heavy glass of the hospital window muffled the low, diesel rumble of the van idling three stories below. Its headlights were switched off, casting an ominous silhouette against the wet asphalt of the ambulance bay.

Stallone’s gaze remained fixed on the vehicle. He didn't need to check his watch to know that time had run out. The men in that van weren't ordinary debt collectors; they were operatives tied to the city’s deepest political corruption rings—men who specialized in erasing loose ends before the morning shift change.

"They're not here for negotiations, Jonathan," Stallone said, his voice entirely devoid of fear. "They're here to clean up your mess. And that includes you."

Jonathan scrambled to his feet, wincing as a sharp pain lanced through his ribs. He staggered toward the window, pressing his pale face against the cool glass. Panic had finally eroded his cold exterior, replacing it with the frantic desperation of a cornered animal.

"No," Jonathan muttered, shaking his head rapidly. "My father said... he said they were just going to relocate the child until the investigation blew over. He promised me no one would get hurt!"

"Your father lied to you just like he lied to every frightened young mother who walked through these doors looking for help," Stallone countered, turning his body slightly to cover the doorway. "You were just a pawn in a much larger game of human trafficking disguised as private healthcare."

Suddenly, the overhead lights in the hospital room flickered violently and died, plunging the space into near-total darkness save for the harsh amber glow of the emergency exit sign.

Down the hallway, the familiar electronic hum of the central security monitors cut out. A heavy, unnatural silence descended upon the floor, broken only by the distant, rhythmic dripping of a leaky faucet somewhere in the utility closet.

Jonathan froze, his breath catching in his throat. "The power... they cut the main grid."

"Stay behind me," Stallone ordered quietly, his massive frame shifting into a defensive stance as he listened intently to the sounds echoing from the stairwell.

Heavy, synchronized footsteps were ascending the concrete stairs. Boots hitting the steps with military precision. More than one set. At least four, possibly five armed men moving with professional tactical discipline.

"They're coming for the ledger," Jonathan whispered, his knees shaking so violently he could barely stand upright. He looked at Stallone with wide, pleading eyes. "Give it to them. Please! If they find me here with you, they’ll kill us both!"

"If I hand over that book, hundreds of innocent children traded over the last decade will never find their true families," Stallone replied, his voice firm as iron. "And you will spend the rest of your natural life hiding behind men who view you as expendable."

The heavy fire door at the end of the hallway groaned open with a slow, metallic screech.
