Chapter 4: Striking Ground
Stripped of his position at the family foundation, Arthur did not waste time mourning the loss of status. He threw himself into building his own independent consulting firm—a dream he had set aside years ago to appease his mother's ambitions.
The first few weeks were exhausting. Money was tight, and the upcoming birth of their baby added constant pressure. Yet, despite the financial uncertainty, the atmosphere in their home was lighter than it had ever been. There were no surprise visits from Victoria, no passive-aggressive comments about Elena’s background, and no suffocating standards to meet.
Elena spent her days preparing the nursery, painting murals of gentle forests and warm sunshine on the walls. One afternoon, while sorting through old storage boxes in the attic, she stumbled upon a dusty leather-bound photo album belonging to Arthur’s late father, Richard.
As she flipped through the yellowed pages, Elena noticed a pattern. In almost every photograph, Richard looked tired, his eyes lacking warmth whenever Victoria was standing beside him. Tucked between two pages was an unsent letter written in faded ink by Richard years before his passing.
“My dear Arthur,” the letter read. “If you are reading this, I hope you have found the courage I never possessed. I spent my life bending to your mother’s expectations, trading my peace for quietness. Do not make my mistake. Love is not control. Protect your heart, and protect the family you choose to build.”

Tears welled in Elena’s eyes as she held the letter against her chest. Richard had suffered in silence, but his unspoken wish had finally come true through his son. When Arthur came home that evening, Elena handed him his father's final words.
Arthur read the letter in silence, a heavy tear rolling down his cheek. ""He knew,"" Arthur whispered softly. ""He wanted me to break the chain.""
