Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm

By noon the following day, Victoria’s retaliatory strike had begun. True to her manipulative nature, she did not call Arthur directly. Instead, she mobilized her network of high-society friends and extended family members to launch a subtle smear campaign.

Arthur’s phone buzzed continuously with incoming texts and missed calls from relatives. Uncles, aunts, and family friends left messages echoing Victoria’s twisted narrative: How could you treat your mother like that? After all she did for you? She’s devastated! You need to apologize immediately.

""She’s controlling the narrative,"" Arthur remarked grimly, tossing his phone onto the kitchen counter. ""She’s portraying herself as the heartbroken mother who was tragically cast out by an ungrateful son.""

Elena placed two mugs of warm tea on the table. ""Let them talk, Arthur. People who truly know us won't buy into her lies. And those who do aren't people we need in our lives anyway.""

Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the driveway. It was Victoria’s personal attorney, Mr. Harrison. Arthur walked out to meet him on the porch, refusing to invite him inside.

""Arthur,"" Mr. Harrison said smoothly, holding a thick envelope. ""Your mother is deeply hurt by last night's misunderstanding. However, she is willing to move past this if you sign these documents. They relinquish your claims to the family estate trust and step down from the family firm voluntarily, without public statement.""

Arthur took the envelope, but instead of opening it, he looked the attorney dead in the eye. ""Tell my mother that she can keep her money and her estate. But tell her this as well: if she ever steps foot on my property or approaches my wife again, I will file a formal restraining order and release the security footage of her striking Elena last night.""

Mr. Harrison’s suave composure faltered for a fraction of a second. He nodded slowly, took a step back, and returned to his vehicle. Arthur turned back toward the house, feeling a profound sense of liberation with every step.
