Over the next six months, Victoria underwent rigorous physical therapy. Arthur visited her twice a week, helping her with simple tasks and ensuring she received the best medical care possible. He maintained clear boundaries—he did not bring Maya to the hospital, nor did he promise that things would return to how they were—but his presence was a constant, compassionate lifeline.
As Victoria’s speech slowly returned, her fierce posture was replaced by a quiet, reflective stillness. Stripped of her status and independence, she had been forced to confront the wreckage of her relationships.
One afternoon, as Arthur prepared to leave, Victoria spoke up from her armchair. Her voice was raspy, but clear.
""Arthur,"" she called out.
He stopped near the door and turned around. ""Yes, Mom?""
Victoria looked down at her lap, her hands trembling slightly. ""I... I was wrong,"" she choked out, the words painful and heavy as they left her lips. ""I thought... if I controlled everything, no one could ever leave me. Your father... he pulled away from me years ago, and I blamed everyone except myself.""
