Chapter 2: Echoes in the Dark

Sleep did not come easily that night. Every creak of the house made Elena flinch, expecting Victoria to burst back through the front door with her sharp reprimands and icy demeanor. Beside her, Arthur lay awake, staring at the ceiling as the moonlight cast long, pale shadows across their bedroom.

Elena turned onto her side, watching her husband's strained profile. ""You're thinking about her, aren't you?""

Arthur sighed, turning his head to meet her gaze. ""I'm thinking about how long I let myself be blind. Growing up, my father always told me to keep the peace. 'Your mother just wants the best for us,' he’d say whenever she insulted my choices or controlled my life. I thought staying quiet was strength. Tonight, I realized it was just cowardice.""

""It wasn't cowardice, Arthur,"" Elena reassured him softly. ""It was conditioning. You were taught that loving her meant obeying her.""

""Well, the condition is broken,"" Arthur said firmly, taking Elena's hand in his. ""Tomorrow, I’m changing the locks on the house. I’m also stepping down from the board at my family’s foundation. If she wants to use her wealth and influence as a weapon, she’ll have to find another target. I won't let her hold our future hostage.""

Elena felt a mixture of awe and concern. Leaving the family foundation meant giving up financial security and stepping into the unknown right before their child was born. Yet, looking into Arthur’s eyes, she saw an unwavering resolve that gave her courage.

""We’ll manage,"" Elena said, smiling through her exhaustion. ""We have a roof over our heads, and we have each other. That's more than enough.""

As the first light of dawn began to paint the horizon in soft hues of amber and blue, Arthur pulled Elena close. The storm outside had not vanished, but inside their walls, a quiet sanctuary was finally taking shape.
