Chapter 8 - The Custody Battle

The morning sun filtered through the high glass windows of the county family court. The room was tense, filled with corporate lawyers representing the vast, crumbling Vance estate, social service representatives, and news reporters hungry for updates on the high-profile scandal.

Julian sat at the defense table in a sharp navy suit, looking exhausted but determined. Clara sat beside him, dressed in a simple black dress, her hand resting reassuringly over Leo's small shoulder. The boy looked clean and neat, though the bruises on his cheek remained a harsh reminder of the horror he had endured.

Across the room sat Arthur Pendelton, a ruthless senior attorney hired by Eleanor’s remaining trust fund prior to her arrest.

Judge Margaret Stone slammed her gavel down, demanding absolute silence in the courtroom.

"We are here to determine the emergency protective custody and permanent guardianship of young Leo Vance," Judge Stone announced, her sharp eyes scanning the room. "Given the shocking criminal charges brought against his official guardian, Eleanor Vance, the court must act swiftly."

Arthur Pendelton immediately stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Your Honor, while the allegations against Mrs. Eleanor Vance are indeed tragic, my clients represent the broader Vance Corporate Trust. We argue that Julian Vance, as the son of the accused, is far too emotionally compromised and potentially involved in the family's financial irregularities to be granted custody. The child should be placed in state foster care until an independent trustee is appointed."

"That is complete absurd nonsense!" Clara stood up, unable to restrain herself.

"Control your client, counsel," Judge Stone warned, though her tone remained measured.

Julian stood up beside Clara, taking a heavy folder from his briefcase and placing it directly onto the judge's bench. "Your Honor, these are the complete personal financial records of my brother's estate, which I spent all night recovering from the police evidence locker. They include a video diary recorded by my brother two days before his death."

The room went dead silent.

Julian pointed a finger directly at Pendelton. "In that video, my brother explicitly states that if anything were to happen to him and his wife, full legal custody of Leo should be granted jointly to me and Clara Jenkins. He specifically warned that my mother was dangerous."

Pendelton’s face paled slightly, but he tried to recover. "A video recording is not a notarized will, Your Honor—"

"It is when accompanied by a signed handwritten codicil verified by Detective Vance," Julian countered firmly. "I am ready to step down from every position in my family's company today. I don't want the money. I don't want the estate. I only want to protect my nephew."

Judge Stone reviewed the documents carefully for several agonizing minutes. The only sound in the courtroom was the quiet ticking of the wall clock. Finally, she looked up, her expression softening as she looked down at little Leo.

"The court finds that placing Leo Vance in foster care would cause unnecessary emotional trauma," Judge Stone declared. "Emergency temporary custody is hereby granted jointly to Julian Vance and Clara Jenkins."

Leo let out a long breath and buried his face in Clara’s side. But as they stood up to leave, a police bailiff hurried into the courtroom and whispered urgently into Detective Vance’s ear.

Vance’s face darkened instantly. He turned to Julian and Clara with a look of sheer urgency.

"Richard Sterling just escaped from the transport vehicle on his way to the county jail," Vance whispered. "And he took an officer's weapon."
