Chapter 7 - Hidden Truths

Two hours later, the grand mansion was surrounded by yellow police tape. Investigators were combing through the subterranean vault, while ambulances and media vans lined the street outside.
Inside the quiet back seat of an unmarked police sedan, Clara wrapped a warm blanket around Leo's shoulders. The boy was eating a sandwich, looking far calmer than he had all day, though his small face was still heavily bruised.
Julian walked over, holding the brown envelope Detective Vance had recovered from Richard's briefcase. His face was pale, his eyes filled with immense grief and regret.
"How is he?" Julian asked softly, looking down at his nephew through the open car window.
"He's resilient," Clara said gently, stepping out of the car to give Julian privacy. "Physically, he'll heal. But mentally... it's going to take time."
Julian opened the envelope and pulled out a faded handwritten letter along with a legal document dated three days before his brother's fatal car crash.
"This isn't just about money," Julian said, his voice cracking as he read the document. "My brother discovered what Mother and Richard were doing six months ago. He was preparing to strip Mother of her power of attorney and cut her off completely. The car crash... Clara, it wasn't an accident."
Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. "What are you saying?"
"The brake lines were severed," Julian whispered, tears finally streaming down his face. "Richard and my mother killed my brother and his wife to stop them from going to the authorities. And then they took Leo in so they could control his inheritance until his eighth birthday."
Leo looked up from the back seat, his big hazel eyes innocent and full of quiet understanding. "Is my daddy coming back?" he asked softly.
Julian dropped to his knees beside the car door, reaching in to take Leo's small, bruised hand in his own. "No, buddy. He's not. But I promise you, on my life... no one will ever hurt you again. I am going to take care of you."
Detective Vance walked over, carrying a tablet. "Mr. Vance, we just finished interrogating your mother at the precinct. Under the weight of the evidence found in the vault, she cracked. She signed a full confession implicating Richard Sterling in the murder of your brother."
Julian closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. "What happens now?"
"Now, the court needs to determine legal guardianship for Leo," Vance said, looking between Julian and Clara. "Given the circumstances, the state social services will temporarily take him into protective custody until a hearing can be held tomorrow morning."

Leo’s eyes widened in instant panic, and he grabbed Clara’s dress again. "No! Don't let them take me!"
Clara looked at Detective Vance, her expression turning into pure steel. "Nobody is taking him anywhere."
