Chapter 13 - The Retribution

Clara woke up to the steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor. The sharp smell of antiseptic filled her nostrils. She opened her eyes to find a bright, sterile hospital room filled with warm morning light.
Sitting in a chair right beside her bed was Julian. His arm was supported by a dark sling, his face bruised and bandaged, but his eyes were alive with profound relief as he saw her open her eyes.
"Julian..." Clara rasped, her voice dry and weak.
"I'm here, Clara. I'm right here," Julian whispered, taking her hand gently and pressing it to his lips. "You're safe. Leo is safe."
Clara sat up quickly, panic surging through her chest. "Where is Leo?"
Julian pointed toward the small window on the hospital room door. Outside in the hallway, Leo was sitting on a bench, happily eating a bowl of ice cream while a friendly female FBI agent read him a comic book.
"What happened at the cabin?" Clara asked, tears filling her eyes. "I thought... I thought you were gone."
"Vance and I managed to hold them off in the cellar until FBI tactical units arrived," Julian explained softly. "Vance took a bullet to the shoulder, but he's going to survive. When the FBI swarmed the grounds, Richard Sterling tried to flee into the woods. He was captured three hours ago near the river."
A heavy weight lifted off Clara's chest, allowing her to breathe freely for the first time in days.
"And Eleanor?" she asked softly.
Julian’s face grew solemn. "Mother signed a complete confession this morning. She was charged with conspiracy to commit murder, grand larceny, and felony child abuse. She will spend the rest of her natural life in a maximum-security prison. Richard is facing federal murder charges for my brother's death."
The hospital room door opened gently, and Detective Vance stepped inside, his arm in a clean white sling. He smiled warmly at Clara.
"You're quite the force of nature, Miss Jenkins," Vance said, placing a thick manila folder on her bedside table. "The federal court has finalized all the legal paperwork. The Vance family assets have been completely frozen and transferred into an untouchable trust fund controlled solely by a court-appointed independent guardian—you."

Clara looked at the documents, then at Julian. "Both of us."
Julian smiled, taking her hand tightly. "Both of us."
