Chapter 5 - The Emergency Escape

The air inside the dark vault grew noticeably warmer and heavier with every passing second. Detective Vance began coughing, his flashlight beam wavering as he searched the reinforced concrete walls for any weakness.
"The walls are solid poured cement," Vance said, his voice strained. "We have less than three minutes before the gas reaches lethal levels."
Julian was desperately searching through the wooden crates, tossing aside dusty ledgers and empty iron boxes. "My father built this shelter in the 1980s! He was obsessed with safety! There has to be a secondary exit!"
Leo, kneeling on the floor to stay beneath the rising gas, pointed a small, shaking finger toward the bottom of the massive steel safe in the center of the room. "Look... behind the big box. There’s a tiny door with a wheel."
Clara dropped to her stomach, shining her phone light under the safe. Tucked away in the bottom corner of the concrete floor was a heavy iron maintenance hatch, sealed with a circular metal valve.
"Julian! Over here!" Clara shouted.
Julian and Detective Vance scrambled over. Together, the two men gripped the rusted iron wheel. It resisted at first, locked by decades of rust and neglect. Julian gritted his teeth, veins standing out on his neck as he put every ounce of his strength into the turn. With a sharp metallic crack, the wheel yielded, spinning counter-clockwise.
Julian yanked the hatch open, revealing a narrow, vertical brick shaft with iron rungs leading straight down into blackness. Fresh, cool air rushed up through the opening, instantly clearing the sweet, deadly fumes around them.
"Clara, take Leo and go first!" Julian ordered.
Clara didn't hesitate. She gathered the long, heavy train of her wedding gown, tied it tightly around her waist, and guided Leo into the dark shaft. "Hold onto my neck, Leo. Keep your eyes closed."
As Detective Vance descended behind them, Julian took one last look around the smoke-filled vault. He grabbed a thick leather binder labeled STERLING FINANCIAL LOGS from the desk, stuffed it into his jacket, and plunged down into the shaft just as the main vault ceiling collapsed in a shower of sparks and heat.
They climbed down in total darkness until Clara’s feet hit soft, damp earth. They emerged into an old drainage tunnel that ran beneath the property grounds. Sunlight streamed in from an opening fifty yards ahead, leading toward the dense pine forest behind the estate.

As they stumbled out into the bright daylight, breathing in the cold mountain air, the sound of a roaring helicopter engine echoed directly above them.
Richard Sterling was standing on the private helipad at the edge of the forest, holding a briefcase, ready to board a waiting aircraft.
