Chapter 3 - The Secret Vault

The smell of melting metal and ash filled the room as the keys sank into the roaring fireplace. Julian rushed forward, grabbing the iron poker to retrieve them, but Eleanor merely laughed—a dry, bitter sound that chilled everyone present.
"It doesn't matter, Julian," Eleanor hissed, stepping closer to the officers as they placed her wrists in steel handcuffs. "The boy gets nothing. Everything your brother left behind is legally tied to my name. If I go down, he starves on the street."
Clara knelt down to Leo's eye level, ignoring the police officers who were now escorting Eleanor out of the mansion. She gently wiped a tear from the boy's bruised cheek. "Is that true, Leo? Did your dad leave you something?"
Leo nodded slowly, his hazel eyes wide with fear. "In the basement. Behind the wine cellar. There’s a red door with a big lock. Daddy said if anything ever happened to him, everything I needed was in there."
Julian turned around, his face pale. "The old storm shelter? Mother kept that room locked for years. She claimed the foundation was unstable."
"It's not unstable," Leo whispered, pulling another small item from his pocket—a heavy, antique brass key that Eleanor had failed to find. "Daddy gave me this key on my seventh birthday. He told me to keep it hidden in my shoe."
Julian stared at the key in shock. He looked at Clara, who gave him a decisive nod. Together with Detective Vance, they navigated down the winding, dimly lit stone stairs leading beneath the mansion. The air grew cold and damp as they passed rows of dusty wine bottles until they reached the far wall.
Behind a heavy velvet curtain hung a solid iron door painted faded red.
Julian took the small brass key from Leo's hand, his fingers trembling as he inserted it into the heavy iron keyhole. It turned with a heavy click. The door creaked open, revealing a dusty room filled with wooden crates, filing cabinets, and a massive steel safe in the center.
Detective Vance stepped inside, shining his flashlight across the room. He stopped at a large wooden desk littered with financial documents and ledger books.

"This isn't just an estate filing," Detective Vance said, lifting a heavy leather binder. "This is an illegal offshore banking operation. Your mother wasn't just abusing this child, Mr. Vance... she was using his father's identity to launder millions of dollars."
Suddenly, the heavy iron door slammed shut behind them, locking with a sharp, electronic click, plunging the room into absolute darkness.
