Chapter 11 - Into the Wild

The force of the explosion threw Julian and Detective Vance to the dirt floor. Thick black smoke filled the cellar, accompanied by the blinding glare of tactical flashlights cutting through the haze.
"Go! Now!" Vance screamed, turning toward the doorway and opening fire on the advancing shadows.
Clara didn't waste another second. She shoved Leo into the narrow coal chute. "Keep crawling, Leo! Don't stop!"
The boy scrambled through the dark, narrow metal shaft, his small hands digging into the coal dust. Clara scrambled in right behind him, pushing herself through the tight space just as heavy boots thundered down the cellar stairs behind them.
They burst out of the external chute into the freezing night air, tumbling into a deep, brush-covered ditch behind the cabin. The forest was pitch black, illuminated only by the pale light of the full moon filtering through the high pine canopy.
Behind them, gunshots continued to echo from inside the cabin, followed by a terrifying silence.
"Clara..." Leo whimpered, his teeth chattering from the cold and absolute terror. "Where is Uncle Julian?"
"He's fighting for us, Leo. We have to keep moving," Clara whispered, gripping his small hand tightly.
They ran through the dense forest, tripping over exposed roots and pushing through sharp, thorny bushes that tore at Clara's ruined wedding dress. The freezing mountain air burned in her lungs, but sheer adrenaline pushed her forward.
Behind them, the loud sound of a dog barking echoed through the trees.
"They have tracking dogs," Clara realized with a spike of dread. "They're following our scent."
She looked around frantically. Twenty yards ahead, a rushing mountain river cut through the valley, its icy waters churning over jagged rocks. It was dangerous and freezing, but it was their only chance to lose the tracking dogs.
"Leo, we have to cross the water," Clara said, kneeling down to look him in the eyes. "It's going to be very cold, but I need you to be brave. Can you do that for me?"
Leo wiped a smudge of coal dust from his eye and gave a small, brave nod. "I'm brave like my daddy."
Clara lifted him onto her back, wrapping his arms securely around her neck. She stepped down into the rushing, ice-cold water. The current was brutally strong, nearly knocking her off her feet instantly, and the freezing temperature felt like thousands of tiny needles pricking her skin.
She fought her way across step by grueling step, gasping for breath as the water reached her waist.

Just as she reached the middle of the river, a bright flashlight beam swept across the water from the bank behind them, illuminating them completely in the dark.
"There they are!" a harsh voice yelled from the darkness behind them. "Shoot to kill!"
