Chapter 4

The cool air of the evening rushed through the open front door, carrying the distant wail of sirens that signaled the arrival of federal support units outside the sprawling Morgan estate. Inside the parlor, the atmosphere remained stifling, thick with the metallic scent of fresh blood and the bitter chill of absolute betrayal. Clara Morgan sat heavily on the edge of a velvet-upholstered armchair, her silver hair unkempt, staring blankly at the polished floor where her grandson was now having his hands secured behind his back. Leo offered no resistance, his youthful arrogance entirely replaced by a hollow, defeated stare directed squarely at the toes of his dirty sneakers.
Captain Vance stood sentinel near the entrance, ensuring the secure perimeter remained intact while his subordinates processed the preliminary detention logs on encrypted tactical tablets. Evelyn Morgan finally accepted a clean gauze pad from a newly arrived military medic, pressing it gently against the cut above her temple to stem the sluggish flow of blood. She did not flinch as the antiseptic stung the raw flesh; her physical pain was entirely overshadowed by the monumental task of rebuilding what these two individuals had nearly destroyed from the inside out.
"Director Morgan, medical transport is idling at the curb," Captain Vance offered quietly, his voice softening just enough to show professional respect without breaking protocol. "A concussion protocol is mandatory given the kinetic force of that impact."
"I am fine, Captain," Evelyn replied, her voice firm despite the slight tremor in her hands. She stood up slowly, swaying for a fraction of a second before finding her balance on the wooden floor. She smoothed the front of her purple dress, though the dark stains remained indelible reminders of the violence she had just endured. "My physical injuries can wait. The digital ledger backups in the basement safe must be secured before anyone attempts a remote server wipe from the secondary office in Chicago."
Clara suddenly stirred from her chair, her voice trembling with a mixture of fury and desperation. "You're destroying this family, Evelyn! Arthur built this company with his bare hands! We gave you everything, and this is how you repay decades of trust—by siccing the military on your own flesh and blood?"
Evelyn turned slowly, her dark eyes pinning her mother-in-law in place. The restraint in her posture was palpable, holding back a tidal wave of righteous anger that had accumulated over years of silent observation and meticulous evidence gathering.

"Arthur built a legacy of honor, Clara," Evelyn answered evenly, every word deliberate and measured. "You and your grandson built a parasitic enterprise that stole directly from the men and women serving our country overseas. You skimmed logistics funds earmarked for armored vehicle maintenance and field rations to finance your extravagant lifestyle and Leo’s reckless gambling debts. You didn't just betray our family name; you betrayed every soldier relying on those supplies to come home alive."
Leo flinched at the mention of his debts, his eyes darting away in shame. Clara opened her mouth to retort, but the sheer weight of Evelyn's words silenced her completely. There was no defense against the truth, especially when delivered by the woman who had spent the last eighteen months tracing every single hidden transaction across international borders.
