Chapter 2

The encrypted line crackled with static before a crisp, authoritative voice answered from the Pentagon's internal routing system. Evelyn Morgan remained flat on her side, the purple fabric of her dress ruined by her own blood, but her focus was laser-sharp. She ignored the pounding throbbing inside her skull and the terrified glare shooting from her mother-in-law’s aging eyes. Leo took an involuntary half-step backward, the first real sign of panic flickering across his youthful features as he began to comprehend the irreversible magnitude of what had just been set into motion.

"State your name, security clearance code, and the nature of your emergency," the voice on the other end commanded, devoid of any emotional warmth, operating purely on high-level protocol.

Evelyn spat a small drop of blood onto the floorboards, wiped her mouth with the back of her trembling, stained hand, and spoke directly into the speakerphone with absolute, unyielding intensity.

"Evelyn Morgan. Clearance Delta-Seven-Alpha. Activate the military fraud investigation regarding Morgan Logistics and Supply immediately," she demanded, her voice carrying an edge that brooked no argument or bureaucratic delay.

In the background, Clara dropped the baseball bat. It hit the wood with a dull, echoing thud that rattled the nearby display cabinet. The older woman's face drained of color, her blue dress suddenly looking far too bright for the grim reality closing in around them. For months, Clara and her late husband’s business associates had been funneling military logistics funds through shell accounts managed by Leo’s grandfather, skimming millions meant for overseas troop provisions. They had thought Evelyn, the primary auditor and CEO, was merely an inconvenient obstacle to be removed quietly through a staged domestic dispute and forced incapacitation.

"Code confirmed, Director Morgan," the military operator replied without missing a beat. "Federal task force units are currently operating within a five-mile radius of your residential sector. Asset freezing and apprehension protocols are initiating now. Stay on the line."

Evelyn slowly pushed herself up onto her hands and knees, ignoring the searing pain in her ribs. She looked directly at Clara, whose hands were now trembling uncontrollably. The tables had turned with terrifying speed. The very corruption Clara and Leo had spent years building, bribing, and hiding behind was about to be systematically dismantled by the institution they had exploited.

"You can't do this," Clara whispered, her voice cracking for the first time. "We're family. We share this name."

"You lost the right to that name the moment you decided a baseball bat was a corporate boardroom tool," Evelyn replied, her tone icy and devoid of malice, representing pure, unadulterated justice.

Leo dropped to his knees beside his grandmother, desperately reaching for his own phone, but Evelyn’s stern glare froze him in place. "Don't even think about it, Leo. Your encrypted burner phones won't save you from a federal wiretap already authorized under the National Defense Authorization Act. You're children playing a game you never had the intellect to comprehend."

The heavy front door of the Morgan estate shuddered under the weight of a sudden, synchronized knock, followed immediately by the decisive sound of heavy boots stepping onto the porch.
