Chapter 1

The polished oak floorboards of the Morgan family parlor absorbed the sudden, heavy thud of Evelyn Morgan’s body. Just a second prior, the forty-year-old woman in the elegant purple dress had been standing tall, her dark hair immaculate, her presence demanding absolute obedience in her own home. Then came the arc of the heavy Louisville Slugger, swung by her own mother-in-law, Clara, a sixty-year-old woman whose silver hair and blue dress contrasted sharply with the brutal violence of the act. Standing nearby, twenty-year-old Leo Morgan—Evelyn’s nephew and Clara’s fiercely loyal grandson—watched the collapse with cold, impassive eyes. He wore a simple green shirt and dark jeans, his posture entirely relaxed, embodying a chilling domestic complicity.

A sharp blow to the temple had opened a ragged cut. Crimson blood now trailed from Evelyn’s nose and seeped from the corner of her mouth, staining the expensive fabric of her collar. Yet, as she lay flat on the timber, her dark eyes refused to glaze over with defeat. Instead, they locked onto the two figures towering above her. With a deliberate, agonizing effort, Evelyn tilted her chin upward, her breath coming in shallow, shuddering gasps. The pain was searing, a white-hot fire burning through her skull, but her voice did not tremble when she spoke her warning.

"Know your place," Evelyn muttered firmly, her tone carrying the terrifying weight of a woman who had built an empire on calculated leverage and refused to see it stolen by small-minded greed.

Clara tightened her grip on the wooden baseball bat, her knuckles whitening. She had assumed this sudden ambush would break Evelyn once and for all, ending a bitter custody and asset dispute that had poisoned the family for decades. Leo shifted his weight, his youthful face devoid of remorse, misinterpreting the prone woman's defiance for mere shock. They believed the house was secure, the communications cut, and their secret alliance hidden from the world. They were dangerously, fatally mistaken.

Ignoring the metallic taste of blood pooling in her mouth, Evelyn began to crawl. Inch by agonizing inch, she dragged her battered frame across the polished floor toward the antique mahogany side table where her smartphone lay face up. Clara took a threatening step forward, raising the bat for a second, definitive strike, but Leo held up a restraining hand, whispering that it was already over. Evelyn's bloody fingers finally brushed against the smooth glass surface of the phone. Snatching it up, she unlocked the screen with a swift thumb swipe, ignoring the bloody smudges she left behind.

An incoming secure line blinked on the display. Without hesitation, she pressed it to her ear, her voice slicing through the heavy silence of the room.

"This ends tonight," Evelyn said intensely, her gaze fixed on Clara.

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. Clara’s triumphant sneer faltered, replaced by a sudden, creeping dread as she realized Evelyn was not pleading for mercy. She was calling in the heavy artillery she had kept hidden for years.
