Chapter 3

The front door didn't just open; it was bypassed with practiced military efficiency. Three military police officers in crisp, slate-grey service uniforms strode into the foyer, their boots striking the hardwood floor with an authoritative rhythm that shattered the tense silence of the Morgan household. Leading the trio was Captain Vance, a man in his late forties with severe features, sharp eyes, and an unmistakable air of unwavering discipline. Behind him, two armed investigators secured the perimeter, their hands resting calmly but deliberately near their sidearms.
Clara’s jaw dropped in absolute shock. The baseball bat lay forgotten on the floor near her feet as she stared at the men in uniform, her mind desperately searching for an escape route that no longer existed. Leo froze, his hands hovering awkwardly near his pockets, entirely stripped of the reckless bravado he had worn just moments earlier.
Captain Vance bypassed the two trembling relatives entirely, his gaze immediately locking onto Evelyn Morgan. Even kneeling on the floor in a blood-stained purple dress, her dark hair mussed and her face marked by trauma, she commanded the room. Vance immediately signaled for a medical responder to step inside, but Evelyn held up a firm hand, refusing assistance until the official protocol was satisfied.
"Director Morgan," Captain Vance said, stepping forward and offering a stiff, respectful salute. "We received your encrypted override. The audit flags have been verified across all three regional distribution hubs."
"Thank you, Captain," Evelyn said, her voice raspy from the blow to her throat, yet steady. She pointed a blood-stained finger directly at Clara and Leo. "The primary architects of the embezzlement scheme are right here. They attempted to silence a federal auditor to prevent the delivery of these financial records."
Clara finally found her voice, though it sounded thin and cracked with panic. "She’s lying! This is a domestic dispute! She tripped, she fell—we were trying to help her—"

Captain Vance didn't even turn his head to look at Clara. Instead, he motioned to the two investigators flanking him. "Evelyn Morgan, you are under investigation as the reporting party and director, but right now, my orders are explicit regarding the suspects in this room." Vance turned his attention back to Clara and Leo, his expression hardening into stone. "Clara Morgan. Leo Morgan. You are both hereby placed under federal military arrest for treasonous fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of federal defense operations."
The words hung in the air like a heavy sentence. Leo opened his mouth to protest, but the sound caught in his throat as the first investigator stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy tactical zip-ties from his duty belt. Clara clutched at her chest, her breathing turning shallow as the reality of decades of unchecked greed finally crashed down upon her. There were no lawyers to call, no bribes to offer, and no family loyalty left to exploit. The system they had mocked had finally arrived at their doorstep.
