Chapter 10

The federal district courtroom was packed to capacity with reporters, legal observers, and military attachés when the heavy oak doors swung open and the bailiff called the court to order. Evelyn Morgan sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed impeccably in a charcoal grey tailored suit, her dark hair neatly pinned back, the faint scar near her temple the only physical reminder of the brutal assault she had survived.

Through the secure side entrance, Clara and Leo Morgan were escorted into the room by armed federal marshals. Clara wore a standard orange holding facility jumpsuit, her silver hair unwashed and her face drawn with exhaustion and shock. The fierce, arrogant defiance she had displayed in her parlor had vanished completely, replaced by a bitter, hollow resignation as she realized the full magnitude of her defeat. Leo walked close behind her, his head hung low, desperately trying to avoid the flashing cameras of the press corps assembled in the back of the room.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Thomas H. Sterling," the bailiff announced crisply.

Judge Sterling, a stern-faced jurist with decades of federal bench experience, stepped up to the elevated mahogany dais, adjusted his spectacles, and scanned the crowded courtroom before fixing his gaze directly on the two defendants standing before the bar.

"Please be seated," Judge Sterling said, his voice echoing authoritatively through the vaulted room. "We are here today for the formal arraignment of Clara Morgan and Leo Morgan under federal indictment case number 2024-FR-8890, charging conspiracy, wartime fraud, and obstruction of federal defense operations."

The assistant U.S. attorney rose smoothly, outlining the core charges with devastating precision, detailing how the defendants systematically diverted millions of dollars in military logistics funds and attempted to silence the primary federal auditor through premeditated violence. When the prosecutor detailed the physical assault on Evelyn Morgan and the subsequent emergency override call made from the estate parlor, a collective murmur of disbelief rippled through the gallery.

Judge Sterling listened intently, occasionally making notes on a paper pad before looking down at Clara and Leo, whose court-appointed defense attorneys stood quietly beside them, recognizing the impossibility of mounting a viable defense against an airtight federal case backed by unassailable digital and physical evidence.

"How do the defendants plead to the charges as read?" Judge Sterling asked, his voice cutting through the silence of the courtroom.

Clara’s defense attorney cleared his throat nervously, looking at his client before speaking. "Your Honor, under advisement of counsel, my client enters a plea of not guilty at this time, reserving the right to review potential plea negotiations."

Leo’s attorney followed suit with a identical plea, though the young man himself remained completely silent, staring fixedly at the floorboards between his feet.

Judge Sterling nodded slowly, his expression hard as stone. "Given the gravity of the federal offenses, the undeniable threat posed to national defense logistics, and documented attempts to destroy evidence and intimidate federal officers, the court denies all motions for pre-trial release. The defendants will be remanded to federal custody without bail pending trial. This court is adjourned."

The heavy gavel fell with a sharp crack that signaled the definitive end of the Morgan family’s era of untouchable impunity.
